I think Ross Taylor knew but Stuart Broad was absolutely convinced. It's a bit of a soft ending for Taylor.

Given! This is exactly what England were looking for to Ross Taylor. Stuart Broad hits him on the pad. The umpire's finger goes up but, after a quick chat with Latham, Taylor reviews.
This is all very gentle. It's quiet around the ground. The scoring rate is low. The threat from the bowlers is low, apart from the odd good nut from Broad. New Zealand aren't getting away from England but Root's side aren't creating much either.

The Supreme Meme QC: Why would you bowl on a pitch like this in a match you need to win?!
Latham 54, Taylor 23
Every time I watch a Test in New Zealand with the spectators spread out on the grassy banks I just think that it's the best thing in the world.
It's a perfect day now in Hamilton. The sun is beating down which won't help Joe Root nerves around his decision at the toss, if he has any.

Even on the grass banks at Hamilton there are sartorial standards.
An MCC tie on show at Seddon Park, although I'm not certain how well the accompanying tracksuit bottoms would go down at Lord’s.
Broad is on the money to Latham here. It feels like something could be coming. An inside edge is all that saves the left-hander from a plumb lbw.
I must say I've not noticed Ollie Pope's keeping today and that's the biggest compliment I can give him.
He's been tidy.

Stuart Broad is the lead bowler being the most experienced. But he's not only a very good bowler, he's got a good thinking brain. I like how he tried something different to Ross Taylor there with Dom Sibley at short mid-on.
Latham 53, Taylor 23
Well bowled, Stuart Broad. That's the best delivery of this session. He finds the perfect length and the ball zips on past Tom Latham's edge. That deserved a wicket.
A ball later Jofra Archer does the most nonchalant piece of fielding you could wish to see at mid-off. A grabs the ball in his left mitt and then lobs the ball at the stumps at the far end. Taylor was well in though.

Chris Woakes in 19 Tests at home has taken 70 wickets, while in 13 Tests away he's taken 19 wickets.
Zak Crawley has fumbled a couple today, having also hurled the ball for four overthrows earlier. You'd forgive him for being nervous on debut.
A little misfield gives Taylor a run that brings up the fifty partnership.

Ollie Pope is the best prospect England have produced in the last 20 years and that is a fact based on his career so far and the way England have managed his entrance to Test cricket by constantly playing him out of position shows exactly why we can't produce world class batsmen.

Woakes is aiming for Ross Taylor's big front pad. Woakes throws his arms up in the air after thinking he had snuck one through.
It would have been absolutely plumb.
Taylor is telling himself to play straighter.
I still can't get used to Chris Woakes with a beard.
He's going to start off from the other end at the beginning of this session.

The picture I saw of the wicket two days ago, it looked very green. Sometimes you can turn up and be fooled by that because the pitch looks very different on the morning of the first day.
Latham 51, Taylor 21
A maiden for Broad to start. Tidy but not too threatening. There's no movement.
Well that must be some of the thinking behind England choosing not to play Jack Leach or Matt Parkinson. But will this pitch dry out and turn? It looks patchy.
Taylor is watchful to Broad early on.

Spinners have averaged 49 at this ground in recent years while seamers have averaged 29.
It looks like Stuart Broad will start with the ball.
