There's no-one better in this sort of pressure situation than Alastair Cook.

He plays and misses three times as Lewis Gregory finds some away swing, and purses his lips as if to say 'hmm, what's going on here then?'.

    It's a maiden over.

Loser92: That Van Der Merwe innings may just have won Somerset the Championship.

Julia: Death, taxes, and Jack Leach making an useful contribution to a 10th wicket- stand.

Adam Savoury: Potentially a title winning innings from Van Der Merwe, absolutely praying for two days of rain now.

I'm guessing you're an Essex fan Adam?

  7. Somerset 203 v Essex 0-0published at 15:06 British Summer Time 24 September 2019

    Browne 1, A Cook 0

Nick Browne is on strike as Essex begin their reply at Taunton.

Lewis Gregory has the new ball for Somerset, who must be feeling pretty good now after that last-wicket stand between Roelof van der Merwe and Jack Leach.

Browne's recent Championship scores are 6, 3, 65, 0 and 2 - so he's not in the best of nick.

The last ball of the over is a full toss and although Browne is denied a boundary by a good stop, he scampers safely through for a single despite Tom Banton's throw hitting the stumps.

  8. Sussex 155-5 v Worcspublished at 15:05 British Summer Time 24 September 2019

Clark blocks out the last two balls of Finch's over.

Charlie Morris to bowl and Brown strokes the ball through the covers for four.

Brown dabs the last ball into the covers for one and he'll keep the strike.

  10. Stevens to stay with Kentpublished at 15:01 British Summer Time 24 September 2019
    Breaking

Only a few weeks ago, Kent decided this season would be Darren Stevens' last for the county.

But now, after a series of magnificent all-round displays, they have agreed a deal with the 43-year-old for the 2020 season.

What an example to younger players he is.

    Sussex 150-5 v Worcs

Adam Finch will bowl first up as he had two deliveries left in his 12th over before an early finish yesterday.

Pressure on Sussex captain Ben Brown (7*) and Tom Clark as they return to the middle.

Essex batsman on BBC 5 Live Sports Extra

"Essex will be hoping to take a little bit of string out of the Somerset attack. A 35 minute session before tea, the last thing they need is a flurry of wickets."

    Somerset 203 v Essex

Roelof van der Merwe perishes attempting another audacious stroke - as it seemed inevitable he would - as he tries to reverse sweep Aron Nijjar, but loses his balance and is bowled behind his legs.

Jack Leach is left unbeaten on 11 after a last-wicket stand of 59 in 12.3 overs between the pair.

Van der Merwe only faced 51 balls, but hit four sixes and three fours - and he has now given Essex something to think about.

Batting isn't easy on this surface and Somerset will be hoping to get quickly into their top order and sow a few more seeds of doubt.

  14. 6 runs

    Somerset 201-9 v Essexpublished at 14:50 British Summer Time 24 September 2019

Van der Merwe 58, Leach 11

Roelof van der Merwe smashes Simon Harmer over mid-wicket for another maximum and Somerset have a batting point. This has been one hell of an effort for his side. Unconventional, but highly effective.

The six also means Harmer has conceded 100 runs in this innings - although his five wickets will offer some consolation.

It's been one of those days.

Not quite bad enough to abandon and not quite good enough to get on the park.

Well batted Roelof van der Merwe, who reaches a 42-ball half-century with a towering six over long-on off Aron Nijjar. He then tickles a single to bring up a 50 partnership with Jack Leach.

  18. Somerset 187-9 v Essexpublished at 14:41 British Summer Time 24 September 2019

Van der Merwe 44, leach 11

'Crude' could describe one or two of the shots played by Roelof van der Merwe, but Somerset followers won't give a damn about that.

A swipe to square leg brings him one run, so Jack Leach must face up to four balls in this Simon Harmer over. The England spinner is unfazed and blocks them out with a degree of comfort.

  19. Glamorgan frustrated by rain and Watlingpublished at 14:41 British Summer Time 24 September 2019

    Durham 262-8 v Glamorgan

    Nick Webb
    BBC Wales Sport

Durham had the better of the one hour of play that was possible after a delayed start at the Riverside with 65 runs added to their overnight total for two wickets - both falling to Marchant de Lange.

BJ Watling scored his 17th first-class century, passing 9000 runs at this level on the way and remains a thorn in Glamorgan's side on 104 not out.

It means Glamorgan are one wicket short of a third bowling point in a game they must win to have any chance of promotion to Division One.

Durham coach James Franklin told BBC Newcastle:

“We were very keen to get out there and so were Glamorgan, so an hour’s play is better than none and it’s made the game move forward a little bit.

    On BJ Watling's innings:

“It’s been of the more controlled innings we’ve seen in our Championship season from BJ. He’s been brilliant and to be a hundred not out in his second county game is a great achievement.”

Glamorgan fast bowler Marchant de Lange told BBC Sport Wales:

“Frustrated with the weather. We knew it was coming and we’d have loved to scoop up four quick wickets early. It didn’t quite go that way but we’re still in it with two days left.

    On his future at Glamorgan:

“I would love to stay on with the club (at the end of the current contract), there’s a bit of chat, it’s looking positive and hopefully we can come up with a good deal.”

  20. Somerset 186-9 v Essexpublished at 14:39 British Summer Time 24 September 2019

Van der Merwe 43, Leach 11

Birthday boy Aron Nijjar is called up by Ryan ten Doeschate for what will be only his third over of the innings.

Roelof van der Merwe spurns a single available after he square cuts, but does want one from the next delivery after a similar stroke.

Left-arm spinner to left-arm spinner now as Nijjar bowls to Jack Leach. Nothing doing from three deliveries which end the over.
