  1. Somerset 185-9 v Essexpublished at 14:35 British Summer Time 24 September 2019

Van der Merwe 42, Leach 11

No slips for Roelof van der Merwe and we are treated to the rare sight of Sir Alastair Cook sprinting around the boundary at third man to restrict the Somerset batsman to two.

A single ends the over as van der Merwe denies Jack Leach the strike.

  2. Somerset 180-9 v Essexpublished at 14:32 British Summer Time 24 September 2019

Van der Merwe 37, Leach 11

Just a single from the latest Jamie Porter over, and these two have added 36 so far for the final Somerset wicket. Vital runs, perhaps, in what may turn out to be a low-scoring game.

  3. Bad light stops play at Lord'spublished at 14:31 British Summer Time 24 September 2019

    Middx 199-5 v Derbys

And here comes the rain as well!

Really hard work being a cricket fan in late September.

The inspection is due any moment now.

Loads of rain this morning but it's brightened up a bit since then.

  5. Update from the Ovalpublished at 14:29 British Summer Time 24 September 2019

    Surrey 246-2 v Nottinghamshire

Play will begin at 14:45 if there is no further rain, with 47 overs to be bowled.

Scott Borthwick will resume 109 not out, with Ollie Pope on 78.

  6. Bad light stops play at Lord'spublished at 14:28 British Summer Time 24 September 2019

    Middx 199-5 v Derbys

There are big dark clouds looming in from the west and I'm afraid the players are off for bad light.

  7. Somerset 179-9 v Essexpublished at 14:27 British Summer Time 24 September 2019

van der Merwe 36, Leach 11

We start a new Simon Harmer over and Roelof van der Merwe smashes the ball through mid-wicket and picks up two runs.

A sweep follows and Sam Cook slips over embarrassingly at square leg, ending up flat on his back, allowing it to run away for four.

WICKET Simpson lbw b Dal 4published at 14:26 British Summer Time 24 September 2019

    Middx 199-5 v Derbys

We're one floodlight down at a gloomy Lord's.

Anuj Dal is going to have a bowl.

Driven between point and cover by Jon Simpson for four. Stylish way to get off the mark.

    And now he's out!

The keeper-batsman misses a straightening ball and is pinned plumb in front.

  9. Somerset 172-9 v Essexpublished at 14:24 British Summer Time 24 September 2019

Van der Merwe 29, Leach 11

    Jamie PorterImage source, Rex Features

Jamie Porter bangs in a bouncer to Jack leach which flies over his head - and it's a no-ball.

He's faced Cummins, Hazelwood and co, Jamie, so that's not likely to scare him.

Porter goes up in an lbw appeal, but the umpire says 'no' (video replay suggests it should have been 'yes'), and follows that with a superb yorker, which Leach just manages to squeeze out at the last moment.

  10. Close of play at Leicesterpublished at 14:21 British Summer Time 24 September 2019

    Leics 155 v Lancs 2-1

Another grim scene for cricket fans.

  12. Somerset 167-9 v Essexpublished at 14:19 British Summer Time 24 September 2019

Van der Merwe 28, Leach 9

Here comes Simon Harmer again and Roelof van der Merwe flays the ball through mid-off for four.

The next delivery is cut away for a couple, and Harmer decides to go over the wicket.

Van der Merwe is more circumspect, but chops down to third man for a single to end the over.

  13. Middx 193-4 v Derbyspublished at 14:18 British Summer Time 24 September 2019

    Malan 64 Simpson 0

Hudson-Prentice goes round the wicket to Malan - who misses an attempted glance and the ball misses leg stump by a coat of varnish.

Malan swings the blade hard at a full ball outside off and gets one to third man.

The ground staff are gathering on the boundary edge...

  14. Somerset 160-9 v Essexpublished at 14:16 British Summer Time 24 September 2019

Van der Merwe 21, Leach 9

Roelof van der Merwe and Jack Leach exchange the singles, before the former attempts a big hit and is fortunate to see the ball fall into a gap off the outside edge.

An on-drive by Leach - supposedly the sign of a quality batsman - but he is denied a run by the mid-on fielder. Cook goes round the wicket and there's nothing doing for Somerset from the last delivery.

  15. Close of play at Riversidepublished at 14:14 British Summer Time 24 September 2019

    Durham 262-8 v Glamorgan

We got an hour of play in this morning but the heavens opened at lunchtime.

    Frustration for promotion hopefuls Glamorgan.

  16. Somerset 157-9 v Essexpublished at 14:12 British Summer Time 24 September 2019

Van der Merwe 19, Leach 8

Roelof van der Merwe continues his entertaining cameo with another reverse sweep for four.

Simon Harmer cramps him for room with the next delivery, but the Somerset batsman then pushes a quick single, bringing Jack Leach back onto strike.

A couple of immaculate defensive strokes follow, and that's the end of the over.

  17. Middx 191-4 v Derbyspublished at 14:12 British Summer Time 24 September 2019

    Malan 62 Simpson 0

Four more runs to Malan as he latches on to a full ball from Hudson-Prentice outside off and drives through backward point.

Five more needed for 1000 Championship runs for the season.

  18. 50 Championship wickets for Luis Reecepublished at 14:10 British Summer Time 24 September 2019

    Middx 186-4 v Derbys

That dismissal of Andersson brings up a welcome landmark for the Derbyshire bowler.

  19. Somerset 152-9 v Essexpublished at 14:09 British Summer Time 24 September 2019

Van der Merwe 14, Leach 8

We know all about Jack Leach's batting pedigree, don't we, after his exploits for England.

The Somerset number 11 opens the face and guides the ball past gully for four.

The next delivery induces a drive from leach and although it takes the edge, it flies away for a second successive boundary and takes the total past 150.

    Varun Chopra
Essex batsman on BBC 5 Live Sports Extra

"That was a nip-backer. A thoroughly deserved wicket for Sam Cook, who has bowled fantastically well and really carried the seam bowling burden for Essex."
