    Middx 186-4 v Derbys

An attempted leave goes horribly wrong for Martin Andersson and he gets a thin edge through to the keeper.

    Luis Reece has struck early.

The new batsman is first innings centurion Jon Simpson.

  2. wicket

    WICKET Bess b S Cook 10published at 14:04 British Summer Time 24 September 2019

    Somerset 144-9 v Essex

    Gone.

Sam Cook cleans up Dom Bess with a magnificent delivery which cuts back and flattens middle stump.

Out comes Jack Leach to a hero's welcome.

  3. Somerset 144-8 v Essexpublished at 14:04 British Summer Time 24 September 2019

Bess 10, van der Merwe 14

    Astonishing.

Roelof van der Merwe attempts a reverse sweep off Simon Harmer and although the ball comes off somwhere near the toe of the bat, it clears the fielder on the backward square leg boundary and brings him a second six.

  4. Middx 185-3 v Derbyspublished at 14:03 British Summer Time 24 September 2019

    Malan 56 Andersson 8

Andersson drives Hudson-Prentice through point and down the slope for four and then switches to block mode for the rest of the over.

Good pace and carry as the keeper collects at head height.

  5. Watch Simon Harmer's five wicketspublished at 14:01 British Summer Time 24 September 2019

Essex spinner Simon Harmer has now taken 83 Championship wickets this season.

Here are his five in this game.

  6. Somerset 138-8 v Essexpublished at 14:00 British Summer Time 24 September 2019

Bess 10, van der Merwe 8

Sam Cook squares Roelof van der Merwe up with a superb delivery which flies past the edge and through to the keeper. He scampers a single from the next delivery, giving the more orthodox Dom Bess the strike.

BBC 5 Live Sports Extra reveals that Somerset-born John Cleese has been seen at the ground. IT'sbeen tough for batsmen so far - will we something completely different when it's Essex's turn?

  7. Middx 181-3 v Derbyspublished at 13:58 British Summer Time 24 September 2019

    Malan 56 Andersson 4

Luis Reece will resume from the other end. It almost looks pleasant here now.

Quite a turnaround from this morning's rain Armageddon.

A whip through leg side by Malan brings Middlesex the first four of the day.

  8. 6 runs

    Somerset 137-8 v Essexpublished at 13:56 British Summer Time 24 September 2019

Bess 10, van der Merwe 7

Why bother getting your eye in - Roelof van der Merwe slog-sweeps his first delivery and clears the rope at backward square leg.

He follows that with a ramp shot for a single - clearly he's not prepared to let Simon Harmer bowl to him and await his fate.

  9. Middx 177-3 v Derbyspublished at 13:54 British Summer Time 24 September 2019

    Malan 52 Andersson 5

Fynn Hudson-Prentice is bowling and Malan picks up a single to backward square leg.

Andersson looks to cut without any footwork and misses.

  10. Somerset 130-8 v Essexpublished at 13:53 British Summer Time 24 September 2019

Bess 10, van der Merwe 0

Somerset do bat deep and every run is going to be precious now.

Roelof van der Merwe has six first-class centuries behind him, but he watches from the other end as Sam Cook sends down a maiden to Dom Bess, including one delivery which leapt off a length and beat the outside edge.

  11. Play abandoned at Canterburypublished at 13:51 British Summer Time 24 September 2019

    Kent 147 v Hampshire 80-3

A second Division One game is called off without any play today as the Spitfire Ground follows the earlier lead of Edgbaston. If conditions are better tomorrow, Hampshire will resume their first innings 67 behind.

  12. Day two begins at Lord'spublished at 13:50 British Summer Time 24 September 2019

    Middx 176-3 v Derbys

It's been a very wet morning at Lord's and not much better this afternoon but the players are back in the middle.

Dawid Malan resumes on 51 not out and 16 short of 1000 Championship runs for the season.

    Martin Andersson is on four.

In theory 59 overs are left before stumps. In practice we'll get nowhere near that.

  13. for Simon Harmerpublished at 13:47 British Summer Time 24 September 2019

    Somerset 130-8 v Essex

Craig Overton tries to sweep, misses, and the ball runs away for four byes.

The next delivery is his last as he repeats the same mistake made by Tom Abell earlier in the over and goes back onto his stumps.

The ball strikes him on the pads and he's gone - and it's another five-for for the prolific Simon Harmer.

  14. Further inspection at Grace Roadpublished at 13:47 British Summer Time 24 September 2019

    Leics 155 v Lancs 2-1

The conditions looked hopeless this morning but here's another venue where patience might be rewarded.

A huge wicket for Essex in the second over after lunch as Somerset's captain goes onto the back foot against spinner Simon Harmer and the umpire adjudges him leg-before.

Harmer now has 4-60 as Craig Overton comes to the crease.

  17. Somerset 126-6 v Essexpublished at 13:43 British Summer Time 24 September 2019

    Abell 45, Bess 10

Under way after lunch in the title decider and it's Sam Cook with the ball for Essex.

Dom Bess is on strike and is fortunate to survive as one skids through low just past off-stump.

It's a maiden - and providing they can push this total on a bit, Somerset won't be too displeased to see uneven bounce.

  18. Play to resume shortly at Lord's - weather permittingpublished at 13:29 British Summer Time 24 September 2019

    Middx 176-3 v Derbys

At one stage it looked like the ground was underwater but the forecast has improved since then.

Let's get some cricket in here. Please.

  20. Better prospects for Taunton?published at 13:19 British Summer Time 24 September 2019

    Somerset 126-6 v Essex

We've been taking a look at the forecast for Taunton for the next two days.

Although more rain is expected later this afternoon, days three and four should be fine - if cloudy - during the hours of play, with any further bad weather concentrated overnight.

Maybe we are going to have the exciting denouement the County Championship deserves after all.

Remember, Essex only need to avoid losing the match to become champions, Somerset must win it.
