Sam Curran with an almighty grunt as he bounces one in to Pretorius.

The 21-year-old really gives each ball his absolute most. A* for effort but no reward as drinks are brought on.

A decent recovery from South Africa after losing Philander.

And fair play to Pretorius too. He's come in and played his shots.

Broad goes in short and Pretorius shows his intent with an attempted pull but can't connect. Wider from Broad this time and another play and a miss. That was there to be hit.

Joe Denly is back in the outfield, we can assume that he's recovered from the migraine he had a few overs or so ago.

It's been an interesting morning. Philander didn't play a very good shot, but since then this pair have played very nicely. De Kock is playing, dare I say, a captain's innings. I think England started with the follow-on in mind, but that has slipped now.

An average batting side? Is that a tad harsh on the likes of Stokes, Sibley and Pope?

South Africa have been pretty ordinary with the ball, but you can only face what you're up against.

De Kock drives Broad through cover to bring up his fifty. He's been the one shining ray of light for the home side.

Jay Perry: In this series, England have been an average batting side playing against a really poor attack - aside from Anrich - and have been a really good bowling side against a poor batting side - aside from Quinton.

Joe Root gives Mark Wood a little breather as Sam Curran is brought into the attack.

Pretorius is struck high on the pads, Curran asks the question but it was very high.

If you're just waking up on this Sunday morning, England struck early when a poor shot from Vernon Philander earned Chris Woakes a wicket.

But De Kock and Pretorius have since been relatively untroubled, South Africa in desperate need for them to bat for a long, long time.

Quinton does what Quinton does. He doesn't get too flustered and he's going to play the same way.

    De Kock 49, Pretorius 29

De Kock is one run shy of his 21st Test half-century from 46 matches. He also has five centuries to his name.

Here's a question for you, who from this South Africa line-up would get straight into England's starting XI?

That was an outstanding shot, a deft touch. To help a 90mph-plus delivery over the keeper is outstanding. It's a great skill to bat with the tail.

Shot of the innings by De Kock.

Mark Wood, bowling at above 90mph, bangs it in short and the South African, with an uppercut Anthony Joshua would be proud of, reads it perfectly and guides it over Jos Buttler's head and down to the boundary for four.

This partnership is now worth 35, the highest of this innings. That tells you everything you need to know about the state of this game.

Gary Whitehouse: South Africa are set to lose 3-1 but have the top run scorer in De Kock and top wicket taker in Nortje. Bizarre.

Dwayne Pretorius will have been sat in the home dressing room yesterday and watching his teammates lose wicket after wicket, thinking 'I could do better' ...

Well, he now has four boundaries to his name. Broad bowls in the channel and a streaky edge, via the outside of Pretorius' bat, goes though gully for four.

Joe Denly isn’t on the field as he is suffering from a migraine. Jonny Bairstow is substituting for him.

Mind games from Mark Wood as he and De Kock battle it out.

The England seamer goes short and angling into the chest of De Kock, who doesn't quite read the delivery and sends the ball ballooning back towards the bowler. It was in the air but just short.

Wood then goes fuller and reels De Kock in, who edges just wide of Ben Stokes at slip. A third slip would have gathered that.

    Brilliant variation.

The press corps are always buoyed when they discover Mark Wood is the player selected for the daily media conference.

He never fails to give you something and the same energy and enthusiasm he shows on the field is always demonstrated in his answers to reporters.

Last night he revealed the secret to his recent batting success, which has seen him strike eight sixes in two innings, including one over extra cover he couldn’t stop smiling about.

Wood revealed when he was out injured he did a lot of work on his batting at the Newcastle indoor centre with his dad Derek and wife Sarah feeding the bowling machine.

"I knew we were coming here and it was a bit bouncy, so I was working on how I thought they'd attack me aiming for my head. She pinned me a couple of times and told me to get in line."

Stuart Broad into the attack and straight away, like he has done throughout his career, he makes something happen.

A full delivery, angling into the pads of De Kock, finds the outside edge and falls just short of Joe Root at first slip.

Pretorius with another boundary to end the over, a sweetly timed cover drive which sends the ball racing through.

It seems like South Africa lack a bit of depth in their squad. Losing Rabada for this match was a blow, but the bowling yesterday was poor. When they came out with the bat they went nowhere.

Is Mark Wood the funniest bloke to ever put on the England whites?

He was full of laughs in an interview this morning as he reflected on his innings yesterday.

And he just did a little dance, much to the amusement of his teammates.

The smile, momentarily, disappears as Pretorius drives him through the covers for four. A classy shot.
