    The explanation...

UltraEdge was not working for the Temba Bavuma review so the umpires have decided that South Africa did not lose their review, despite it being three reds on ball tracking. And not sure it should matter, given they did eventually check to confirm Bavuma didn't nick it.

That means Rassie van der Dussen had a review to use and was allowed to use it, despite not calling for it until he had basically left the field.

All very confusing and poor communication from the umpires. England can be rightly aggrieved.

    This is a total shambles.

Ball tracking shows that Adil Rashid's googly was going on to miss leg stump and Rassie van der Dussen is reprieved.

The right decision made in the end but for all of the wrong reasons.

Van der Dussen didn't even ask about the review until he got to the edge of the boundary, way after the 15 seconds you have to call for it.

For reasons unknown, the umpires have allowed Rassie van der Dussen to review this.

The umpires are now sending Rassie van der Dussen back.

    What is going on?!

South Africa have surely lost their review from the ball before?

Rassie van der Dussen is given out lbw first ball to Adil Rashid but all is not as it seems as the umpires intervene.

Bavuma lbw Rashid 29 (SA 89-2)

Finally, the wicket is confirmed and Adil Rashid has the breakthrough.

Temba Bavuma didn't pick the googly, got a big stride in, missed the ball and was hit in front.

There is bounce in this Wanderers pitch but not nearly enough to save Bavuma, with ball tracking showing it was going on to hit leg-stump.

After a curious delay, the third umpire confirms no edge and Bavuma walks off.

They are now checking that the ball didn't flick the edge of the bat.

Why didn't they check the edge in the first place?

    Huh.

Ball tracking shows three reds and Temba Bavuma walks off.

But he's been stopped by the boundary for the third umpire to have another look.

Bavuma hit on the pads. Big appeal and up goes the finger.

Bavuma sends it upstairs - he's hoping it's going over.

Big appeal for lbw - not given.

Eoin Morgan runs in and decides against a review.

"Top edge central, that," chirps Jonny Bairstow as Temba Bavuma misses on the sweep.

YJB isn't happy about Bavuma running down the middle of the pitch.

The umpire is having a word now as well.

I think the first two overs of Root were a good call. Perhaps the third was one too far.

Close! Temba Bavuma nicks Adil Rashid and the ball flies very quickly to Joe Root's right at slip.

Root gets fingertips on it. Would've been a blinder.

Moeen Ali then does tremendous work to chase the ball down and pull it back inside the rope, saving one run.

Solid start from Moeen, keeping South Africa to just four singles.

England could do with picking up a couple of wickets though.
