Fenners: Buttler as opener clearly doesn't work. He's a middle order finisher. There aren't many T20s until the World Cup - can we bin this experiment now please?

    I like it, James.

Jason Roy drives hard and wristily. He gets a thick edge but there is no slip. Four runs down to third man.

Bairstow chips over mid-off for four to end the over and ease the pressure a little. South Africa have still made a good start.

  5. dropped catch

Bairstow dropped on 1published at 3.3 overs

That's a chance! Jonny Bairstow has drilled one back at Bjorn Fortuin in the air. It went quickly but was at a comfortable height. I think he'll have expected to take it.

The sightscreen has been fixed. We're ready to go again. Jonny Bairstow is on strike.

Excellent knowledge. I get the impression you may have played this game before, Ian. Either that or you're a Cambridge University super fan.

Before today, Buttler averaged 46.50 opening and 26.56 elsewhere in the order in T20Is.

De Kock is turning back to his spinner Fortuin. There's a delay because the advertising board behind the bowler is stuck and has not turned black.

Jonathan France: Buttler absolutely wasted opening the batting. Roy & Bairstow all day for me. The line up is so flexible that Buttler can come in at any point depending on the situation.

  13. Eng 18-1published at 3 overs

    Roy 15, Bairstow 1

Jonny Bairstow gets under way by driving his first ball for one into the deep but it's still just two runs and a wicket from Lungi Ngidi's over. That's a fine start for the South Africa quick.

Lungi Ngidi strikes again! Jos Buttler had been starved of the strike and he tries to slash a length delivery but gets a thick edge through to the keeper.

An important early wicket for the hosts.

He may have been hit for a boundary but that was a decent over from Beuran Hendricks. Roy and Buttler only managed to sprint singles off the other deliveries.

It's another great turnout for this game. Kingsmead is filling up nicely.
