The umpires do have their umbrellas up but the ground staff are rolling off the covers and there's tractors mopping up the outfield. Mixed messages.

There's always something. If it's not the light, it's the spots of rain that blow in on the coastal breeze.

Ben Stokes, brew in hand, has just wandered out to speak to the umpires, then returned to the dressing room. The groundstaff appear, perhaps threatening to remove the covers.

Ben 'Vincent' Stokes is out in the middle again, making the most of his chance as captain, chatting away to the umpires.

Stokes doesn't have an umbrella but the umpires do. It may be drizzling again.

Many of you have pointed out the size of Joe Root's son's hand. Watch out for him spinning England to victory in the 2041 Ashes alongside Freddie Levy.

Joe Root is missing this game following the birth of his second child. It wasn't always like that...

Former England captains Alec Stewart and Michael Vaughan tell some good tales about cricket and fatherhood here.

Maybe it's just because I've missed it but I'm not even annoyed today. This rain delay is strangely reassuring.

    Maybe that's just me.

A lot of people playing down the frustration caused by the weather, but cricket really doesn’t help itself. The eyes of the world are on the Rose Bowl and barely noticeable speck of precipitation are preventing a coin toss. I’m sorry, but it’s ludicrous.

The covers are still firmly in place on the Ageas Bowl. The latest info is still that conditions will be reassessed at 13:10 BST. The players are currently taking lunch.

Wouldn't you know it? An early lunch is called at the driest and brightest part of the day. There's also a whiff of a bonfire floating across Southampton. I hope it's not from the canteen...

Mike Carter: Powerful discussion on Black Lives Matter on Test Match Special. A reminder their best work is often when there’s no play.

David Fletcher: The discussion on race is interesting. After watching Fire in Babylon, I understood better why the West Indies were so fired up and determined in the 80s.

West Indies all-rounder on BBC Test Match Special

I'm very close to Chris Jordan. The way that him, Moeen Ali, Adil Rashid and Jofra Archer have been accepted. There's a lot of inclusion in the England dressing room. That diversity and culture has bloomed and blossomed. It's for those guys to use that platform.

The TMS team have been discussing the Black Lives Matter movement and racism in cricket and wider society.

Here is the powerful piece I mentioned earlier featuring Michael Holding and Ebony Rainford-Brent.

Brilliant work from Sky Sports' Cricket team...

    Carlos Brathwaite
West Indies all-rounder on BBC Test Match Special

With everything that is going on in society at the moment, with the Black Lives Matter movement, here are a group of young West Indies cricketers who have the opportunity. They made the first step, a powerful one, to leave their islands to take that plunge to come over. Now they have an even bigger opportunity to go out there to represent black folk in England.

We've already had a few tweets complimenting our newest TMS recruit Carlos Brathwaite.

There will also be columns by the West Indies all-rounder on the BBC Sport website.

The first one, which looks at the key players for West Indies throughout the series, is available here if you missed it.

And there's no cake deliveries allowed during this series to the TMS box. A cruel blow.

It's warm, it's humid, it's not raining. Roll the covers up and try and get some cricket in. I don't understand it.
