Cricket is back and that is a wonderful thing, but it has not been the day we all wanted.

We've had just 17.4 overs because of rain and bad light with England reaching 35-1.

Dom Sibley was the one batsman to be dismissed. Rory Burns survived a scare but since then he and Joe Denly have done well.

It has all been very frustrating but it has still the sport we love.

Thankfully the forecast is much better for the rest of the match and there is still plenty of time for a result either way.

Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

Would T20 have been played in the last hour and a half? Absolutely. Would 50-over cricket have been played? Absolutely. Cricket has to be better than just going off for a bit of bad light. You can't blame the umpires because they're under strict guidelines and that's what they have to do. The administrators need to do something about it.

David Draycott: 35-1 off 17.4 overs at close of play on day one is the mediocre cricket news I needed today. Welcome back.

West Indies pace bowler Shannon Gabriel: "It's been a bit tough, coming off and on. We just have to keep switched on when we come back on. It's been a tough day but we've been doing well so far."

On dismissing Dom Sibley: "It was a good delivery after coming back from almost a year off in Test cricket. It feels good to be back.

"The wicket is a bit slower on the side. It's important to come tomorrow, put the ball in the right areas and do the job."

On both teams taking a knee before the start of play: "It was a great moment, showing something we stand for and that racism has no part in cricket."

You're waiting for the Test series to start which can raise anxiety but once the game gets going and you get into the routine of warming, playing, cooling down, recovering, going again. The bio-secure bubble will be a lot easier for the players because they're back into the routine.

It will be strange for the players to not be able to go out for dinner and go out of the ground.

England assistant coach Graham Thorpe, on England and West Indies squads taking a knee before the game: "We felt it was important to show solidarity with West Indies cricket team and in general.

"We don't want racism in our game and we want a fair and equal society for our children. It was absolutely right to do it. You felt a part of something which was very important."

England assistant coach Graham Thorpe on TMS: "It's been unfortunate after a long wait for the return of cricket this summer. Unfortunately with the weather it's not been the day we wanted.

"It's important to have cricket back, it's been a difficult period around the world and slowly things are getting to back to how they were before.

"We're grateful to the West Indies to be over here."

We will not be getting any more cricket today.

There hasn't been much to choose from but my favourite part of the day has been the England players warming up with the names of key workers on the back of their shirts.

The doctors, nurses, teachers will receive the shirts signed by the players who wore them after the match.

Here's one doctor's response showing just what it means...

We seem to say every year; cricket is an entertainment and people want to watch it. Players will have to get to grips that you'll have to play when the light is a bit tricky or there is a spot of rain. Things have got to change because today has been a wind-up.

We've waited months for cricket and it's been one of the most bizarre days for lots of reasons but not least because it's barely rained all day.

It has brightened up, it does seem strange they're not playing. There's one umpire out there with the umbrella.

You do feel like an effort to play would be made.

Play began soon after in the Southampton murk. England had elected to bat after winning the toss.

Rory Burns survived a close call in the first over and a few balls later Dom Sibley was on his way...

Dave Bundy: We have the various diluted versions of cricket. Let the Test match stay as it is. Yes it is sometimes frustrating, but that it all part of the game and how teams cope with rain delays and changing conditions of the wicket. The weather is crucial to the strategy.

You do just get days like this in this country sometimes. One thing they could do for the Pakistan Tests in August, when it does get gloomier a bit earlier, is to start an hour earlier at 10am. With no spectators in the grounds and the players already on site there's really no need to wait until 11am to get going.

What if the rain came after one team had already used the red ball for all of their first innings?

Would it be fair to then make the team batting second use the pink ball?

  20. Postpublished at 17:30 British Summer Time 8 July 2020

But do you use the pink ball for 80 overs of both innings? You'd have to.
