England's Ollie Pope talking to Test Match Special: "It does feel nice especially have missed out so far. In this intense environment you can spend too much time thinking about your failures. Hopefully I sleep well. I'll take a sleeping pill, I normally do when I'm not out and hopefully I'll hit the hay pretty hard."

On Michael Vaughan saying he's England's best young player since Joe Root: "It's a massive compliment, especially from an ex-captain and one of the greats. I take it as a massive positive , I don't necessarily see it as added pressure, it's just a nice thing to have said about you and hopefully i can fill those shoes."

On Jos Buttler: "He hasn't got the big scores that he wanted but he's looked really threatening in the first innings in Southampton and here last week and it's nice to see him get over the 50 mark and hopefully he can kick on."

On the game being affected by the weather: "Hopefully it doesn't affect it too much. If we can bat big then the dream scenario would be to get them in and make them follow on and go again."

I was impressed with Rory Burns at the top of the order. I think he's looked good in the whole series and he must be kicking himself that he's got out to Roston Chase three times in the series.

Ben Stokes got a decent delivery after he was roughed up by the short ball.

But, from an England perspective when you've gone with a batter less and were on 122-4 and you've finished the day on 258-4 they will be delighted.

An even better effort from Ollie Pope and Jos Buttler considering England have played one fewer batsmen because of concerns over whether Ben Stokes will be able to bowl much due to injury.

While Ollie Pope will start unbeaten on 91 after this sumptuous shot to top off his superb day...

Jos Buttler did offer a chance after West Indies took the new ball late on but will resume on 56 not out tomorrow.

Jason Holder is going to get criticised for his decisions to keep the same pace bowlers and choosing to bowl first, it was a massive gamble. I didn't think the pitch did anywhere near as much as the one from last week, it was a typical first day Old Trafford wicket. I'm sure if Holder got that decision again he'd bat first and ask England to do something different.

Jos Buttler steadily got to 18 before two massive sixes off Rahkeem Cornwall helped him cut loose.

And when Buttler cuts loose, there aren't many batsmen better to watch...

  9. 'Pope best young player since Root'published at 18:35 British Summer Time 24 July 2020

    Michael Vaughan
Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

Ollie Pope is the best young player I've seen in the England team since Joe Root.

We all know how popular Jos Buttler is in the England team, the team and management are desperate for him to be consistent in Test cricket because he brings so much to the changing room. There is a big score out there for Buttler.

More from Ollie Pope on Sky Sports: "It does feel like a bit of weight off my shoulders. To miss out in the first three innings and to be in such an intense environment where you can't leave to see your family - you just come back to your room and see the pitch - it's especially nice to score some runs.

"I have found it a little bit challenging being in the bubble. I got out late in the day at Southampton and 20 minutes later I was back in my room. When you're not able to go for a coffee or see the family and then it ends up playing on your mind.

"But the lads get around you and if anyone is mentally struggling a bit then everyone is getting each other's backs."

And what about this for a way to bring up your 50?

  12. Postpublished at 18:33 British Summer Time 24 July 2020

That last session was all Ollie Pope and Jos Buttler. A gorgeous array of shots on offer from both....

I'd very disappointed if I was Phil Simmons, the West Indies coach, with what I saw in the last session.

England's Ollie Pope, who is 91 not out, on Sky Sports: "We're very satisfied, especially after losing an early wicket after being put into bat.

"We came back nicely with myself and Jos Buttler at the end and Rory Burns played a lovely innings as well.

"The way Jos plays, if he's in he's going to be scoring fluently so he's a nice guy to bat with and he's played enough cricket so doesn't need me telling him how to play.

"There's enough in it for the bowlers - a bit of spin and nip there but probably not as much pace as we thought there would be.

"They've got it swinging and have looked after the ball nicely."

    Carlos Brathwaite
West Indies all-rounder on BBC Test Match Special

Sometimes I think you need to give credit to the batsman. Tactically I think the West indies might have got it wrong. When Jos Buttler came in Ollie Pope gave England some impetus. The way they started showed that Rahkeem Cornwall can be handful, particularly in the third innings.

  16. Postpublished at 18:30 British Summer Time 24 July 2020

West Indies hit back though as Roach removed Stokes with a beauty and Rahkeem Cornwall took a superb catch to dismiss Burns.

England were 122-4 and in a precarious position.

Rory Burns and Ben Stokes responded by settling the innings and starting to score more freely...

Roston Chase then removed Joe Root with a superb direct hit...

West Indies made a fine start after inserting England, with Kemar Roach dismissing Dom Sibley for a duck in the first over.

But there was concern for fellow fast bowler Shannon Gabriel after he went off injured before later returning.

That session will have cost the West Indies the Wisden Trophy unless bad light and weather comes into the situation.

The England side were very, very good in that session. Particularly Ollie Pope, I was very impressed with the way he read the situation and was busy. He played some wonderful strokes.

Jos Buttler played a stable innings. It looked like he'd found his balance.

Winning the toss, West Indies had to strike today, they had a good first part of the day. The tone was set in the first over of the day and then the tactical side of the day for the west indies was strange. Roston Chase wasn't used till the 46th over and took a wicket and then he went missing.
