Just spent three hours watching the cricket only to realise the Test will almost certainly end a draw due to all the predicted rain. No regrets though, England did superbly!

That is frustrating. It's been a gripping day of Test cricket, it's been a perfect medium between bat and ball. You never know what could have happened in that 15 minutes.

England will be much the happier side after being put in under cloudy skies by West Indies this morning.

And the tourists were on top at 122-4 but Ollie Pope and Jos Buttler have put together a brilliant stand of 136 to put the hosts in a strong position in this deciding Test.

England will hope the rain holds off for as long as possible tomorrow so they can make progress towards a big score before unleashing their expanded bowling attack on the Windies.

  6. Close of play - Eng 258-4published at 18:19 British Summer Time 24 July 2020

And confirmation that is end of day one as the players have gone off after the scheduled close of play, which was 18:00 BST.

The extra half-hour had been taken to try and fit the overs in but we'll end up several short.

  7. Bad light stops playpublished at 18:16 British Summer Time 24 July 2020

Yes, the umpires reckon it's got too dark, especially with the West Indies fast bowlers on.

The bails are knocked off and out comes the light meter.

Ollie Pope and Jos Buttler lead the players off the field.

The umpires convene - are they concerned about the light?

West indies need a wicket for sure. But you must give credit to Ollie Pope and Jos Buttler. I was very impressed with how Pope took the pressure off Buttler. The ball can't always win so very well done to the batters.

  10. Eng 258-4published at 85.3 overs

Close. Jos Buttler inside edges one onto his thigh pad and the ball just rolls past the stumps.

Arjun Singh: What a joy it is to watch England bat with maturity and patience. I suspect we’ll be much more successful playing like this than trying to get 350 in a day every time.

West Indies really needed this to go to hand...

That is a glorious shot - he really timed that.

  14. Eng 258-4published at 85 overs

    Pope 91, Buttler 56

Ollie Pope hits a drive on the up just short of John Campbell at cover. Needs to be careful with that.

Oh that is majestic though - Pope pushing it down the ground through mid-on for four to move into the 90s.

It is the fifth time that Jos Buttler has taken more than 100 balls to reach 50 in Test cricket.

  16. Eng 252-4published at 84 overs

That's a decent over from Shannon Gabriel, although Jos Buttler is easily able to leave most of it alone.

    A maiden.

  17. Postpublished at 18:05 British Summer Time 24 July 2020

It's remarkable to see Shannon Gabriel still bowling this evening, given he had to spend a fair while off the field in the first session after pulling up injured mid-over.

What's he got in the tank?

To make matters worse for the tourists, they've also lost two of their three reviews...

  20. Eng 252-4published at 83 overs

    Pope 85, Buttler 56

Kemar Roach strays onto the pads last up and Jos Buttler flicks it away to deep square leg for one.
