Rory Burns has looked good today.

He's playing the perfect Test-match opener role - keep out the good balls and punish the bad ones.

Good accurate start from Roston Chase with just a single coming off his first over.

Rory Burns and Ollie Pope must have batted together countless times for Surrey over the years. Can they build a big partnership and put England in control?

  3. Postpublished at 15:08 British Summer Time 24 July 2020

It is indeed time for Roston Chase as he replaces Rahkeem Cornwall.

Interestingly, both spinners have bowled from the Jimmy Anderson end today. Looks like West Indies have learnt that end is best for the spinners from last week.

Roston Chase is warming up. It could finally be Chase time.

Ollie Pope did look behind quite quickly but the ball has been moving a long way after passing the stumps.

Offt, that's an absolute peach from Shannon Gabriel.

He gets one to nip back off the seam and it cuts Ollie Pope in half. Thankfully for Pope it bounces too much and goes over the top of the stumps and Shane Dowrich does brilliantly behind the stumps to stop the ball flying away for byes.

Lovely from Ollie Pope! He uses his feet well and clips through mid-wicket for his boundary before pinching a single to Shannon Gabriel. I'm a big fan of how proactive he is.

He's up to 13 - his highest score of the summer so far.

I imagine he's struggling to enjoy three back-to-back Tests after having been out with an ankle injury, John.

    Burns 54, Pope 8

After a good bit of drop and run cricket from Ollie Pope, Rory Burns sees out five dot balls.

Shannon Gabriel seems to have got over those earlier injury issues. For the time being, anyway!

Tim, it's worth being on your toes with Shannon Gabriel bowling.

He loves a no-ball after all.

As an indication of how much VAR has poisoned the sporting psyche, every time I see an England wicket in the live chat, I think "hold on though - maybe it will be overturned by Stockley Park?"

Cornwall starts with a rank delivery after drinks and Rory Burns gives it the treatment it deserves by cutting it to the fence.

I'm shocked, considering that issues that Burns has had against him, that we haven't seen Roston Chase yet.

He can't go from being your front-line spinner to an afterthought, Jason!

Rahkeem Cornwall will continue after the drinks break.

As well as being a superb spin bowler, he is also renowned for his slip fielding. He averages more than one catch per game in first-class cricket in the West Indies.

I'm praying we see scenes like these in this Test...

I'm reliably informed by our editor that the West Indies slip fielder is actually calling Rahkeem Cornwall "Jimbo".

Apparently it originates from a nickname he had as a kid.

A nickname because of a nickname? I've heard it all now...

    That'll be drinks too.

Another equal period of play. This is on a knife edge, another wicket or two and West Indies are in control but a good partnership and England are on top.

Well batted, Rory Burns. That's his ninth Test match half-century.

Have England finally found a long-term opener?
