Mark Wood is the only England player without a jumper on. They're made of hard stuff in Ashington.

I think this pitch is on the slow side. One from Woakes goes past the outside edge and dribbles through to Jos Buttler. Warner is screaming for Finch to hurry between the wickets. A couple of twos taken.

Chris Woakes with the ball. Aaron Finch and David Warner opening the batting. This feels proper.

Here come England, the majority of the World Cup band back together. I'm trying to think of times when bands have reformed and been as good as before.

It's a chilly day, there's a breeze blowing and quite a thick cloud overhead.

Do let me know what you're up to today. I spent the morning watching Thomas the Tank Engine with my son. I love Thomas, so I'm glad he's getting into it. However, I do wonder why the Fat Controller thinks it's so normal to be able to talk to a bunch of trains. Being a passenger on a talking train would be absolutely terrifying.

    James Anderson
England bowler on Test Match Special

Aaron Finch said it will be minimal damage in the first 10. To hear an Australian speak like that, it's unheard of. They're wary of the pace that England have got.

With Jimmy Anderson in the TMS box and Stuart Broad commentating on TV today, there's a decent new-ball attack in the press box. Aggers can bowl first change.

You can understand why Australia are taking the precaution with Smith not playing, especially the history of the Ashes last year. It is a big loss.

Since the World Cup last year, Steve Smith has been in great nick. It's quite a significant omission.

Stuart Mitchell: Eoin Morgan: "We'll have to close to our best" (to beat Australia) not at our best then just close? Subtle dig at Australia.

Josh Hazlewood has just bowled a practice delivery that swung so much it almost took out Justin Langer, who was having a very in-depth discussion with George Bailey.

Yep, TMS will hit the airwaves in the next couple of minutes. We'll also have in-play highlights in this page and a full highlights show will be on BBC Two at 23:20.

It will be worth tuning in just to see Joe Root's hair. I'm starting to think he might never get it cut.

Australia captain Aaron Finch speaking to Sky Sports: "I probably would have looked to bat anyway, it looks like a good surface.

"Steve Smith got a knock on the head yesterday in practice so it's a precautionary measure to leave him out. Stoinis will bat at three.

"Over the last couple of years we've played good cricket in patches and indifferent in other patches. But trying to be consistent is what we're about.

"There's a lot of world class players here, should be a good one."
