Oh that one really turned. It turns and bounces. You just try and play that one.

This is where I get frustrated with Joe Root. Sometimes he's one step behind. They had a short leg for Shan Masood. If you're in Shadab's position, with Archer bowling, you wouldn't want a short leg and gully but they don't put them in for him.
A full-blooded cut from Shan Masood adds a couple to his total, before he plays around a delivery from Dom Bess that just finds a bit of extra bounce.
Oh, and that's a gorgeous ball! Spin, turn, Masood flumoxed as he presses forward. How has that not taken the edge?
Well, with four minutes to go before lunch, England have called on Dom Bess.

Is it worth giving Dom Bess a go? Get Shan Masood on strike, he struggled a bit against the spinner yesterday.
Shan Masood has gone after the short ball today and he rolls his wrists on another back of a length delivery from Jofra Archer to nab a single.

Shadab has looked frantic at the crease, there might be some nerves.
Risky, very risky from Shadab Khan, flying through for a quick single to get off the mark, and Ollie Pope's shy at the stumps is just wide! If that had connected, Shan Masood would have been on his way, run out at the non striker's end by the junior partner. Ouch.

Martel Moncur: What a difference Chris Woakes’ beard has made to his bowling. He literally looks a different bowler.
Chris Woakes charges in, gets to the crease... and drops the ball. Big smiles as it goes dribbling away.
Ooft, and he's unlucky not to get a wicket as Shan Masood plays across the line and the resulting outside edge goes down to third man for a boundary. Woakes rips another beauty just past the outside edge to end the over.

Understandably, given the quality of the bowling, Pakistan aren't going anywhere in a hurry. The way they are hanging in is admirable. However, the challenge of the second new ball will arrive not long after lunch. The danger is they will not have got very far by the time it comes around.
Shan Masood, who has played so well, slaps three runs off the back foot against Jofra Archer.

Former Pakistan all-rounder on Test Match Special
There's a lot of debate in Pakistan whether Sarfaraz Ahmed should be wicketkeeping and in the side instead of Mohammad Rizwan.
But Rizwan has done enough when he's been given the opportunity. He got back-to-back centuries against Australia before the World Cup. He's been around for a long time.
But my choice would be Sarfaraz because of his experience.
Rory Burns and Joe Root go up for a very enthusiastic caught behind review off Shadab Khan, but he's missed that by a mile. Chris Woakes and Jos Buttler don't make a move, and then Woakes holds out his hands to show just how much Shadab missed that ball by.

Given Woakes' form, perhaps he could have started the day with the ball.
As has been pointed out a few times, Pakistan's tail is very long - and, with the spectre of the new ball looming, they're going nowhere fast.
Chris Woakes sneaks a ball through Shadab Khan's defences to welcome him to the crease.

And finally the edge is found. It was a nice catch from Buttler. Woakes again finds the breakthrough, he's having a terrific summer.

Chris Woakes!
The pressure tells, and Woakes' excellence gets it reward. Just a hint of away movement, Mohammad Rizwan getting seven shades of squared up, and a thick outside edge ends up nestling in Jos Buttler's gloves.

This by Shan Masood is the longest innings, in terms of balls faced, by a Pakistan opening batsman in England since Saeed Anwar's mesmeric 176 off 264 balls at The Oval in 1996.
