If Dom Bess does have to bowl for England in this innings then that suggests they've got problems. You'd hope and expect that the four pace bowlers would be able to do the job.

    Babar 40, Rizwan 9

Broad up at 86mph and three slips waiting patiently to atone for those two dropped catches yesterday but Babar not being drawn in outside the off stump yet.

It's been thrilling, enthralling cricket this morning. Babar Azam is the prized wicket for England - he's the class player and at the top of his game at the moment.

England just need to stay patient and you feel if they find the edge they might get two or three wickets quite quickly because it is happening out there for them, swing and seam.

Curran doesn't have any hair accessories and his luxuriant mop is flicking in all directions as he thunders in, like an animated Hugh Grant. Accurate again in the early 80s-mph but the batsmen appear settled at present.

I mentioned this yesterday but once again it is absolutely freezing in this TMS box. Running repairs have been made to the tape over the air-con vents. Puffer jackets are being worn.

With the gloom around the ground it feels like April not August.

  7. Pak 146-5published at 56 overs

A double change as Stuart Broad comes into the attack from the Pavilion End. He's had that bandana through the wash overnight it appears because it's a brilliant, pristine white. Plenty of sawdust being diligently applied on the crease by Anderson. Broad is up at 85mph but no major alarms for the batsmen.

Pakistan have done alright here because the ball has been hooping around. Babar Azam has forced the bowlers to bowl straighter at him and Mohammad Rizwan has ably supported him. He looks like a combative little cricketer who likes to get stuck in.

  9. Pak 145-5published at 55 overs

    Babar 38, Rizwan 9

The first bowling change of the morning as left-arm seamer Sam Curran bustles in with that ever-present combative expression on his face. Three slips for him but a loosening over to begin with.

There's a lot of noise from the England fielders. They are supporting their bowlers and know that they are on top right now.

Another beauty from Woakes, a perfect awayswinger. Not quite perfect though because it misses the edge as Babar prods forward.

Don't stray onto the pads to Babar it would seem...

  14. Pak 142-5published at 53 overs

Evergreen Lancastrian Anderson completes his 19th over and records a fifth maiden. Excellent probing line again but Babar not tempted into a dabble outside off stump.

Jimmy Anderson bowled a ball at 88mph in his previous over. Has he found the answer to ageing?

Babar looking fluent through the leg side.

  17. Pak 142-5published at 52 overs

    Woakes 1-37

Woakes is getting some pronounced swing but much of it is after the ball has passed the bat. He beats Rizwan outside the off stump with more sharp bounce, which looks quicker than the 83mph recorded.

No success for them so far this morning though and Babar clips another boundary off Anderson through mid-wicket. England's leading Test wicket-taker then beats the outside edge again. An excellent contest brewing.

    Andy Zaltzman
    Test Match Special statistician

Looking at the ball-tracking data from CricViz and balls that they define as a good line and length England have, so far in this innings, bowled 52% in good line and length. And in 1600 innings in Test cricket, going back to 2005, that is the fourth highest percentage by seamers. It shows how accurate and probing England have been.
