It really is desolate. The TV cameras are hidden beneath big green covers. I can see Shane Warne, Nasser Hussain and a couple of Sky camera staff in the stand opposite. Apart from that, the ground is deserted.

  2. 'Anderson made England pick him'published at 11:08 British Summer Time 14 August 2020

Jimmy Anderson's press conference the other day was interesting. He knows the clock is ticking - he knows the winter ahead may be completely barren and at best for him it's going to be Test matches on the subcontinent where again he may not feature too much. Then we're into next summer and that is seriously building a team for the Ashes.

He didn't have a very good game at Old Trafford and he was sort of due a rest of as well the way they are doing it.

If he hadn't played here and someone had come in and done well and forced re-selection for the next game it might have meant that Anderson didn't play here and in the next game and then we thought 'well, what happens here?'.

What he did was a bit like Stuart Broad in a way and made him be picked for this.

The key is Babar Azam. We know he's high quality but he was quite loose outside off stump yesterday - he just threw his bat at a few. England will feel there's still a chance against their number one batsman.

From England's perspective, another wicket and they've got Yasir Shah in. It is a long tail. They will be thinking that 170-180 isn't unrealistic.

It would be a bit slippery for Philippe on his wire out there this morning but with an improved forecast this afternoon, play can continue until 19:30 BST.

I watched Man on Wire last night - absolutely incredible. Got me wondering whether Philippe Petit ever tried cricket given that balance and footwork.

The groundstaff aren't anywhere to be seen, and neither are the umpires. It's a desolate sight and almost abandoned.

  9. 'Great to be back'published at 10:52 British Summer Time 14 August 2020

Sam Curran took 1-23 from 10 overs on his return to the England side and he told BBC Sport: "There is such good competition for places at the minute so it’s all about trying to take the opportunity. I’m trying not to put too much pressure on myself but to enjoy playing for England, which is such a great feeling. I really loved being back with the guys.

"It was quite a late call, they spoke at the start of the summer about rotating the seamers and I think that’s what they were probably thinking, to give Jof a bit of a rest. It was great to be back and hopefully we can get those wickets early in the morning."

The covers are on again. I don't think it is raining at the moment but it has rained this morning and we are in for a delay.

BBC Four is again the place to be for the highlights tonight at 19:00 BST. Ronnie O'Sullivan has some work to do against Mark Selby in the snooker, which will be on the Red Button.

The cricket highlights are repeated on BBC Two at 23:20 after Gardeners' World, I Love 1987 and Newsnight. That sounds like a nice evening in to me.

Ebony is frustrated with the weather this morning. She wants to take over the music on the sound system at the ground to lighten the mood.

She played a potential option - some grime.

    Aggers looked confused.

  14. England v Australia white-ball series next monthpublished at 10:37 British Summer Time 14 August 2020

September is often a lovely month, weather-wise, and there is lots more cricket to come this summer.

England and Pakistan play three T20s after the Tests and it was confirmed this morning that there will be three T20s and three ODI's against Australia next month. The second of those T20s will be live on BBC TV.

We’ve had rain this morning but it has eased in the last few minutes. If it’s still raining now it’s very, very light.

The England players are still out playing some head tennis.

Yes three centuries and two fifties in his last six Test innings for Babar, but the weather had the final say yesterday, reducing play to 45.4 overs as Pakistan reached 126-5.

This man is still there on 25 for Pakistan, however. Will Babar Azam hold the key in his team's quest to level the series? So much to answer as we welcome you to day two of our coverage of the second Test between England and Pakistan from the Ageas Bowl in Southampton.
