  1. Pak 138-5published at 50 overs

Wicketkeeper Rizwan, playing only his eighth Test, steers Woakes away safely through the gully to collect three but the final ball of the over sees him toppling forward in an attempt to drive. Fortunately for Pakistan it misses the timbers.

I had a chat with an excitable member of the security staff this morning. It turns out we share a surname. After much discussion we decided we're not related.

  3. Pak 134-5published at 49 overs

    Anderson 2-36

Anderson again from the hotel end, a slightly furrowed brow already. A superb delivery to finish the over, perfectly pitched and moving away from Babar's bat, but no edge.

Babar Azam just never misses out on the leg side - anything on the middle stump and it's punished every time.

  5. Pak 134-5published at 48 overs

    Babar 33, Rizwan 4

Babar clips Woakes stylishly through mid-wicket for his second boundary and picks up three more runs into the leg-side to retain the strike.

I thought the pitch looked really good yesterday. It's very difficult for the groundsman with all the hot weather but there is an even covering of grass and you feel it will not be two-paced.

  7. Pak 127-5published at 47 overs

Bit more of a breeze now as Anderson comes in with three slips but nothing on offer for them so far. The Pakistan media manager has draped a flag over the balcony to celebrate their country's Independence day.

James Anderson has had sawdust put in each foot-hole - not just by Stuart Broad today but three of them, including the captain Joe Root! It was beautiful and coordinated, it had clearly been spoken about in advance.

  9. Pak 126-5published at 46 overs

Some impressive lift there for Woakes but Rizwan evades it successfully. Now it's Jimmy Anderson's turn with the ball, eight wickets away from 600.

Stuart Broad has addressed the huddle in his white bandana but it will be Chris Woakes, in an Alice band, who will complete the two deliveries of his over from yesterday.

If Andy Dufresne from the Shawshank Redemption had the patience to spend 19 years tunelling out of prison, then he must be an ideal candidate for Test opener.

England will want to bowl Pakistan out for 180 if they can and then start batting. The conditions seem to still be suited for swing bowling.

England are out there preparing. Dom Sibley just dropped one - it went straight through his hands. But the next one he took and he gave a little punch, almost to say 'yes, I'm back on the horse'.

Wickets in successive overs just before the close for England yesterday. Will the ball swing in the hour we have before the rescheduled lunch at 13:30 and provide opportunities for further inroads?

Pakistan to resume on 126-5, with Babar Azam on 25 and Mohammad Rizwan on four.

Forest Gump would make it into my starting XI. Running between the wickets would be superb. Running in the field would cease not. You'd just have remind him to come in once play stops or he'd be out there all night...
