Luke Gray: Really want to see David Willey do well, feel he was a bit hard done by with the World Cup squad last year, while it’s a no brainer Jofra deserved a place, for me Willey deserved a place over Liam Dawson or even Tom Curran.

  3. Ire 28-2published at 5 overs

    Delany 22*

Delany is seeing it like a football, first he thumps Willey gloriously down the ground for four and then collects his fifth boundary with a stylish square drive.

That's the cover drive, it was beautifully struck. It was overpitched by Saqib Mahmood and he just leant into it, it was great timing.

  5. Ire 20-2published at 4 overs

    Delany 14*

Gareth Delany, with the elaborate high backlift favoured by Jonny Bairstow, provides the required resistance with three successive boundaries off Mahmood, an edge followed by a beautifully struck pull and drive.

David Willey could not be wishing for a better start than this.

  7. Ire 7-2published at 3 overs

    Willey 2-4

The first of Ireland's debutants and it's 20-year-old Harry Tector, who plays and misses at a similar one to that which dismissed his captain earlier in the over. A rebuild required.

It's a wide ball, he's swung a few back in but maybe that one, deviously, didn't swing.

That's the captain and a senior player gone for Ireland, it's a nightmare-ish start.

  9. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 2.1 ovs

    Balbirnie c Bairstow b Willey 3 (Ire 7-2)

Oh no skip. Balbirnie chases a wide one and can only snick it through to the hungry gloves of Bairstow.

I'm really looking forward to seeing what Saqib Mahmood can do with the ball later.

    Wait no more Jon.

  11. Ire 7-1published at 2 overs

    Eng won toss

Also taking the new ball for England is 23-year-old Lancashire paceman Saqib Mahmood in only his second ODI. Morgan affords him two slips and although he sends down a legside wide he's already up at 87mph.

Paul Stirling is so important for Ireland and if he comes off he's very dangerous. There was a little bit of swing in and it went straight to short mid-wicket. It's an ideal start for England and a real blow for Ireland.

  13. Ire 4-1published at 1 over

    Eng won toss

Skipper Andrew Balbirnie is the new man for Ireland, he made 60 against the Lions at the weekend and he gets off the mark this afternoon with a confident clip through mid-wicket for a couple.

My big take from that first wicket: Jonny Bairstow shouts "catch" very loud.

  15. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 0.4 overs

    Stirling c Morgan b Willey 2 (Ire 2-1)

Not the start Ireland wanted, the clean-hitting Stirling, with 24 ODI fifties to his name, chips one rather tamely to a gleeful Eoin Morgan close in at mid-wicket.

It's fantastic that the game of cricket has embraced what's going on. It's been a very sad time for the black community and it's great to see all the sides involved this summer have shown their support. It's an important issue and hopefully we can get on top of it and look forward to a much brighter future for all of us.

Both teams and umpires have taken the knee and the returning left-handed all-rounder David Willey will open the bowling with one slip in place.

It's important that England give opportunities to the guys outside the main 15-man in case there are injuries.

I'm excited to see Tom Banton, he is a very clean ball-striker.

The England players take the field in the warm afternoon south-coast sunshine, it's the sky blue shirts and dark blue trousers, Ireland in their famous emerald green.

  20. 'We're grateful to be here'published at 13:57 British Summer Time 30 July 2020

Ireland captain Andrew Balbirnie on TMS: "It’s great to be playing cricket again we’re grateful to the ECB and Cricket Ireland for getting it sorted. When I heard we had a sniff of coming over I was ecstatic.

"It’s going to be tough and we’re going to have to play some of our best cricket."

On the ICC World Cup Super League: "It gives us an opportunity to qualify for the World Cup, we’ve got to concentrate on putting in results against the best teams in the world."
