I very nearly didn't bother tuning in today as I thought there's not a chance there'll be any cricket in Manchester today as it's absolutely pouring down in Lancaster, 50 minutes down the road. Glad I did anyway.

Stuart Broad decides he wants a short leg in as Abid Ali rather flaps at a back of a length delivery.

Mark Wood comes on to deliver the kit to Ollie Pope. Wood is the exact opposite to his captain - he's had a rather brutal post-lockdown buzzcut.

It would have been a magnificent catch had Burns got there. It was just out of reach. Abid Ali got away with that one.

That's the very definition of making the best of a bad situation, isn't it?

Onto the pads strays James Anderson, and he's clipped handsomely away by Abid Ali for four. Anderson looks delighted, mutters to himself, and then he's muttering even more as Abid plays an aerial back-foot shove that just evandes a diving Rory Burns at gully.

My favourite driveway hire offer was ahead of a fledgling floodlit match at Edgbaston in the late 90s when they used cherrypickers with lights on around the ground. A guy was charging £10 for his drive in front of a house covered in posters saying 'NO TO FLOODLIT CRICKET MATCHES'.

Abid Ali has just done a bit of a Steve Smith leave and now I'm having flashbacks to the endless summer of Smith.

Shan Masood goes for an extravagent drive and narrowly avoids eding the ball into his stumps. Close...

Hugo: Cannot remember a time when the opening bowlers have beaten the bat so regularly. Either the openers are incredibly lucky, or the ball is doing a tiny bit too much. Either way, this is a terrific opening spell from Jimmy & Broady - utterly undroppable.

  8. Pak 18-0published at 7 overs

Abid Ali is beaten all ends up by back-to-back deliveries from James Anderson, before he works away a slightly straighter gift for a single.

Four more to Shan Masood doesn't improve Jimmy's mood, as an angled bat allows an outside edge to trikcle past third and fourth slip. A shake of the head from Anderson as he walks back to his mark.

It's been typical Broad and Anderson, probing the top of off stump, moving the ball both ways and giving Pakistan a bit of an examination under the grey sky.

  10. Pak 13-0published at 6 overs

That'll be the first four off the bat as Shan Masood, caught between cutting and leaving the ball, thrashes it just beyond Ollie Pope at gully.

Broad sticks his hands on his hips at the end of the over and then has a brief discussion with Chris Woakes about... something. There's a lot of miming of bat swishing and ball swinging going on and I've got no idea what they're trying to say.

People charging spectators to park on their driveway is one of the great things about cricket. Driving to Edgbaston a few years back for the India Test, Steph and I spent a lot of time spotting who was charging what. There were a fair few neighbours undercutting each other to try and tout up some business.

The thing you lose without spectators is the feeling that a Test match is an event. Walking to the ground this morning, there was no indication that anything was happening here. No bustle, no ticket touts, no street vendors, no old friends meeting, no-one lugging a coolbox the size of a tank, no-one offering their driveway as a car parking space for £25. It's great that sport is back, but the idea it is only taking place to be enjoyed from afar leaves a hollow feel.

Pinged down the leg side by Stuart Broad and Jos Buttler goes flying through the air like he's in a Marvel movie to keep it to just one bye.

Broad recovers and ends the over with another fine delivery that nips past the outside edge of the bat. It's one of those mornings...

A beautiful line but it's the length from Anderson, Shan Masood doesn't want to get on that front foot. It went nowhere. Opened up like a can of beans.

Oh, beauty. An absolute peach from James Anderson, a bit of extra bounce and outswing leaving Shan Masood in knots.

Four leg byes are added to the total as Anderson strays off line, before Anderson channels his grumpiness into another lovely delivery that flies past Shan's edge.

Alex Mc: Experience of Broad & Anderson versus the youthfulness of Shaheen & Naseem. Very interesting battle.

Rachel T: Sorry to be so shallow, but Jimmy’s hair looks lovely...

A quick drop and run gets Pakistan and Abid Ali off the mark, and a solid forward push gets Shan Masood going.

Gosh, this wicket is dry. Stuart Broad's already creating a bit of a foothole and there's a huge puff of dust and dirt as his foot lands at the crease.

I mean, say what you like about Marnus, that clip of Stuart Broad giving him a cheeky wave off the pitch was possibly my favourite moment of the Ashes.

Speaking of Broad, here he is, bandana/headband thing still in place.

It was a tidy over, you expect nothing less from James Anderson. A little bit of movement and a bit of nervousness for Shan Masood. He still has those scars from Anderson.
