Before the rain delay at Edgbaston, Tom Banton's dismissal had brought Somerset wicketkeeper Steve Davies to the crease - an apt arrival on the final day of the World Snooker Championship in Sheffield.

(We know it's spelled slightly different to the six-time Crucible champion but indulge us a bit).

But we're sure you can come up with some better pun-tastic snookery county cricketers, past or present - Andrew Flint-in-off for example.

Rain stops playpublished at 14:17 British Summer Time 16 August 2020

    Warks 121 v Somerset 116-4

The pesky precipitation has returned at Edgbaston, where the grey clouds and intermittent drizzle mean this is likely to be a stop-start affair all day.

Somerset leave the field just six runs shy of securing a first-innings lead.

  3. Bad light stops playpublished at 14:11 British Summer Time 16 August 2020

    Kent v Middlesex 94-4

The post-lunch resumption did not last long at Cantebury, just four overs to be precise.

But the players are back in the pavilion due to bad light - and it looks like the rain that is hitting Sussex might be about to strike Kent too.

Will we get any more South Group action on Sunday? That's in the hands of the cricketing weather gods now.

    Hemphrey b Shaw 12 (Glamorgan 30-2 v Gloucestershire)

    Josh ShawImage source, PA Media

Two wickets in five balls for Josh Shaw as he cleans up Charlie Hemphrey at Sophia Gardens.

The Glamorgan opener plays an orthodox forward defence but leaves a tiny gap between bat and pad and the ball arrows through it and onto the stumps.

We are now into the 22nd over and still just the one boundary in the innings. Bet that will change now Billy Root is at the crease.

  5. Postpublished at 14:02 British Summer Time 16 August 2020

    Northants 6-1 v Worcs 219

We're back under way at Wantage Road - but it's not been a great start post-lunch for the hosts.

Tom Fell stoops low at third slip after Ricardo Vasconcelos edges a quick ball from Joe Leach.

A big test now for a Northants side who have failed to surpass 155 in three of their four innings this summer.

  6. South coast bluespublished at 14:02 British Summer Time 16 August 2020

Sussex is not the place to be at the moment - the games at Hove and Arundel have not seen any play since lunch because of rain.

Surrey are 130-8 against Hampshire, and Sussex 155-6 in their match with 2019 county champions Essex.

  7. wicket

WICKETpublished at 13:58 British Summer Time 16 August 2020

    Selman c Hankins b Shaw 11 (Glamorgan 270-1 v Gloucestsrshire)

The pressure had to tell eventually - and it has.

Josh Shaw produces a fine delivery which takes the edge of Nick Selman's bat and George Hankins takes a good catch moving to his left from second slip.

Nineteen and a half overs gone and still only one boundary in Glamorgan's innings.

  8. wicket

WICKETpublished at 13:53 British Summer Time 16 August 2020

    Banton lbw b Hannon-Dalby 13 (Somerset 101-4)

There's always one bowler every summer that comes out of the pack to record big figures - and Oliver Hannon-Dalby could well be that man in 2020.

The 6ft 7in paceman produces a beautiful in-swinger that traps Tom Banton absolutely plumb. No argument with that one.

That's his third wicket of Somerset's reply and his 17th in the Bob Willis Trophy overall after he took 12 in the Bears' previous match against Gloucestershire. Only Essex's Simon Harmer has more.

  9. Postpublished at 13:51 British Summer Time 16 August 2020

    Durham 205-4 v Leicestershire

It's been a very promising start by Jack Burnham at Grace Road, who squeezed one away through mid-wicket for three runs to earn Durham their first batting point.

He followed that with another cover drive for four off Tom Taylor and has 19 not out from 24 balls.

  11. Postpublished at 13:48 British Summer Time 16 August 2020

    Warks 121 v Somerset 98-3

Somerset are being ultra-cautious following that early loss of James Hildreth, three successive maidens for Warwickshire proof that the Central Group leaders do not feel they need to push the boat out at Edgbaston.

They are playing the patient game, although Tom Banton has just found the boundary with a lovely clip down the leg side off his foot from a Tim Bresnan delivery.

England's future vs England's past there.

  12. Postpublished at 13:41 British Summer Time 16 August 2020

    Durham 194-4 v Leicestershire

Jack Burnham is the new Durham batsman following the dismissal of Alex Lees and he is soon under way with a brace of cover driven fours off Tom Taylor.

The second was the better stroke from a technical point of view as he rather reached for the first. But they all look the same on the scoreboard.

  13. 'Survival a victory' in dot-festpublished at 13:36 British Summer Time 16 August 2020

    Glamorgan 27-0 v Glos (lunch)

    Nick Webb
    BBC Sport Wales

Gloucestershire’s seamers were frustrated in an opening 70-minute session as openers Nick Selman and Charlie Hemphrey somehow came through unscathed.

There was no surprise that Chris Dent chose to bowl first under cloudy skies, but his four seamers beat the edge repeatedly without success.

At one stage, Glamorgan played out 35 dot balls in a row, but survival was victory in itself for the home side.

Gloucestershire are giving a debut to former Middlesex and Derbyshire batsman Tom Lace and left out spinner Tom Smith, while Glamorgan surprisingly included their specialist spinner despite the poor weather forecast.

Alex Lees is dismissedImage source, Rex Features

    Alex Lees isn't impressed.

Tom Taylor produces a fine delivery which swings away from the left-hander and wicketkeeper Harry Swindells claims the catch, supported by the two Leicestershire slips.

Lees doesn't think he touched it and walks away towards short leg before looking up to see the umpire has raised the finger. He has to go.

    Yorkshire 280-4 v Derbyshire - start delayed

Billy Godleman and Matt CritchleyImage source, Getty

Derbyshire skipper Billy Godleman insisted his decision to put Yorkshire in was the right one, despite Dawid Malan scoring an unbeaten 145 in the home side's 280-4 on day one at Headingley.

"Having won the toss and had some helpful conditions we’re just behind at the moment. But that’s through no fault and lack of endeavour from the guys," he said.

“If a good player gets in like Dawid and scores a chanceless hundred, occasionally you can say, ‘Well played’.

“I’m still happy with the decision to bowl first - even more so having seen how the wicket played, particularly in the first two sessions."

    Hildreth c Thomson b Bresnan 1 (Somerset 80-3 v Warwickshire)

Somerset lose a wicket without addition at Edgbaston and James Hildreth will be kicking himself.

The ball from Tim Bresnan is short of a length but he directs his pull shot towards Alex Thomson, who makes no mistake with the catch.

    Sussex 155-6 v Essex - lunch

    Nick Gledhill
    BBC Essex

Essex will be much more pleased with their rewards this morning as four Sussex batsmen fell for the addition of 62.

Simon Harmer, who bowled unchanged from the Sea End, got the important wicket of Ben Brown and followed that by having Delray Rawlings caught off an inside edge onto pad.

Jamie Porter and Aaron Beard both bowled impressively and with pace to claim a wicket each. The forecast for this afternoon is poor and more interruptions are expected tomorrow. Essex will be hoping that there is enough playing time left In this match to force a win batting once.

  19. Lunch at Canterbury and Northamptonpublished at 13:15 British Summer Time 16 August 2020

    Kent v Middlesex 91-4 & Northants 5-0 v Worcs 219

A decent session for Kent - which featured 44-year-old Darren Stevens' 800th career wicket and a couple of scalps for Dutch seamer Fred Klaassen - comes to an end.

Much of Middlesex's hopes will rest on Robbie White, who is hanging around, unbeaten on 29, opposite first-class debutant Jack Davies (6no).

They also squeezed in a Northants batting over before lunch at Wantage Road although quite what the point of coming out for just six balls was, I'm not sure. Northants saw the over through without loss.

Rain returns at Grace Roadpublished at 13:08 British Summer Time 16 August 2020

Just five balls were bowled by Dieter Klein at Grace Road after a delayed 12:55 start before the teams went off again because of further rain.

Durham remain on 176-3 - and having just typed this, they are back on again.
