Stevie W: I wonder if any of these people complaining about how a draw would be resolved in this game also complained when England won the World Cup on the basis of scoring the most boundaries?

Time for a trophy presentation with a difference here.

No lifting of the trophy on the middle balcony of the famous Pavilion this year, instead the Essex players will gather behind a board with the competition logo and await the nod to come forward and take the silverware.

    Essex draw with Somerset

So that's a fourth trophy in three years for Essex who are fast becoming the dominant force in county cricket.

County Championship titles in 2017 and 2019, T20 Blast champions in 2019, and now Bob Willis Trophy winners in 2020.

Essex's red ball momentum continues, they have been the best side in red ball cricket for the last four or five years and we wanted to win this trophy.

The performance today wasn't the prettiest but it was resilient and gutsy.

I'm really happy for the boys, it's a great achievement.

    Essex draw with Somerset

Essex can hand plenty of gratitude to Ryan ten Doeschate and Adam Wheater for seeing them home.

They were wobbling at 131-5 shortly after tea, ten Doeschate and Wheater batted together for most of the rest of the session to do the job.

    Essex draw with Somerset

That's it, they've decided to bring the game to a close and it ends in a draw. Essex are champions!

It all boils down to Essex's better first-innings score.

Somerset gave it a good go on the final day, but they were left with just a little bit too much to do.

  8. Essex 179-6published at 17:29 British Summer Time 27 September 2020

    1 over to go minimum

That's the end of Jack Leach's over in which he took his third wicket of the innings.

Lewis Gregory will bowl the next to new man Simon Harmer... Somerset will probably be able to squeeze out two more.

  9. Essex 179-6published at 17:27 British Summer Time 27 September 2020

A minimum of seven balls remain, although that could climb to 13 if Somerset rattle through the next over.

The last over has to start by 17:34.

    Four wickets to get. Nah.

    Surely not?!

Ryan ten Doeschate tries to sweep Jack Leach but gets a big top edge and the ball loops to George Bartlett in the leg side.

It's unlikely to make a difference to the result, but a bit of a brain freeze from ten Doeschate.

  11. Essex 179-5published at 17:24 British Summer Time 27 September 2020

    2 overs remain minimum

    Runs for Essex!

Ryan ten Doeschate swishes a short one from Lewis Gregory away, rather uncomfortably, and gets three.

Adam Wheater then nicks one past slip, all along the ground, and down to the boundary.

Yet another title is about to wing its way to Essex who have become the dominant county over the past two or three seasons.

    Varun Chopra

Somerset are still trying but the wind has been taken out of their sails, the energy that they had at the start of the day is no longer there - understandably so because they have given everything but haven't managed to take those wicket taking chances that they needed.

  13. Essex 172-5published at 17:20 British Summer Time 27 September 2020

    3 overs remain minimum

Three to go, maybe four if they want to go on until 17:34.

Jack Leach concedes a single off his 21st over but runs don't matter anymore. They haven't for a while.

  14. Essex 171-5published at 17:17 British Summer Time 27 September 2020

    4 overs remain minimum

You won't be surprised to read it's another maiden, this time from Lewis Gregory.

Ryan ten Doeschate and Adam Wheater have put on just 42 in 24 and a bit overs together, but they've done the job.

Essex are going to be Bob Willis Trophy champions in 15 or so minutes time. The game can go on until 17:34.

There's reaction to that win right here.

The shadows from the floodlights are really beginning to show at Lord's now.

Adam Wheater displays perfect defensive technique against Lewis Gregory and that's another over ticked off.

Not quite the ending we were hoping for.

It's been a very determined performance from them.

    7 overs remain

Jack Leach returns but the spinner doesn't bring Somerset the wicket they need.

It's been a masterclass in defence from Ryan ten Doeschate.
