  1. Essex 169-5published at 17:01 British Summer Time 27 September 2020

    8 overs remain

You feel as though Somerset need a wicket in this next over or it's done.

Lewis Gregory is fruitless in his 18th as Adam Wheater plays a nice push through the off-side for a couple. Wheater has also been excellent alongside Ryan ten Doeschate.

These two have been together for more than an hour.

  2. Essex 167-5published at 16:56 British Summer Time 27 September 2020

    9 overs remain

Craig Overton thumps one into the pads of Ryan ten Doeschate, he screams at the umpire pleading with him to give it... not out.

Somerset can feel this slipping away as ten Doeschate defends the remainder.

  3. Essex 167-5published at 16:54 British Summer Time 27 September 2020

Nick Daly: Paul (see 16:39 BST), go and watch limited overs cricket instead?

Somerset tried to leave Essex with not enough time to chase a total, but enough time to take 10 wickets... great game management from Essex.

Greg Root: While I’m happy Essex can win today, surely giving a chance for a winning-draw makes no sense in a “cup final” where there has to be winner?

  5. Essex 163-5published at 16:49 British Summer Time 27 September 2020

    11 overs to go minimum

Hello, a bit of strokeplay from Ryan ten Doeschate!

The right-hander punches Craig Overton through the covers for a couple and then repeats the shot behind point.

Essex aren't chasing the target of 237 any more, but ten Doeschate doesn't want to get bogged down it seems.

Chris Pickering: Listening to the Essex efforts to block out a draw, maybe there could be the following options.

    1) Net run-rate

    2) Points scored in game

    3) 6th day of one-day cricket

Highest 1st innings score was an idea, but may have flattened the game.

  7. Essex 159-5published at 16:43 British Summer Time 27 September 2020

    12 overs to go minimum

Adam Wheater breaks the Jack Leach maiden sequence with a couple and then blocks out the rest of the over comfortably.

Craig Overton will have a last blast for Somerset...

  8. 'It's been a terrific tussle'published at 16:41 British Summer Time 27 September 2020

    Vic Marks
Ex-England spinner on BBC Radio 5 live Sports Extra

Somerset need something extraordinary to happen now but I'm not that optimistic.

It's been a terrific tussle, not what I would call a perfect cricket wicket but one that has made for an intriguing match.

Paul Stairmand: Bob Willis Trophy has been great, but the final would be better if a draw were decided by better run rate across the two innings, rather than better first innings total. Would encourage more attacking batting.

Cedric Silvia: Shame the #BobWillisTrophy, external of degenerating into Essex blocking their way to a trophy. Strange how they said they wouldn’t bat like this.

  11. Essex 157-5published at 16:37 British Summer Time 27 September 2020

    14 overs remain

Fourth maiden in a row from Jack Leach.

This is Essex's title to lose now.

  12. Essex 157-5published at 16:34 British Summer Time 27 September 2020

    15 overs remain

Just to let you know, I'm attempting to eat a roast dinner at my desk while writing this live text commentary. Not the smartest thing I've ever done.

Anyway, Ryan ten Doeschate takes advantage of a couple of wayward leg-side deliveries from Tom Lammonby and flicks him away for a couple of fours.

We're now into the last hour meaning a minimum of 15 overs now remain.

  13. Essex 149-5published at 16:31 British Summer Time 27 September 2020

    15 overs remain

A third maiden on the spin for Jack Leach. It feels like a case of now or never for Somerset.

Tom Lammonby is going to replace Eddie Byrom after just one over from the part-time leggie.

  14. Essex 149-5published at 16:25 British Summer Time 27 September 2020

    16 overs remain

Eddie Byrom is going to have a bowl. Looks like a bit of leg-spin...

The first couple of balls are dragged down horribly and Ryan ten Doeschate swats the second away to the rope.

Four dots follow as the part-timer finds his line.

  15. 'Credit to the Somerset bowlers'published at 16:23 British Summer Time 27 September 2020

    Varun Chopra
Essex batsman on BBC 5 Radio Live Sports Extra

All of the Somerset bowlers have come in really hard today, can't fault them for their lack of effort or commitment to the cause.

  16. Essex 145-5published at 16:23 British Summer Time 27 September 2020

    17 overs remain

Oof, so close to a wicket for Jack Leach.

Adam Wheater pokes forward, the ball spins up off the bat-pad and falls just short of silly point.

    No harm done.

Dr Stephen Hurt: Have enjoyed #BobWillisTrophy, external

It was an inventive and flexible response by @ECB_cricket, external

However, watching Essex block their way towards "a win" seems an anti-climax. Could the trophy not have been shared if final drawn to encourage both teams to try and win match?

Jack Tanner: In hindsight, perhaps deciding a drawn match on 1st innings totals wasn't a good idea after all.

  18. Essex 145-5published at 16:21 British Summer Time 27 September 2020

    18 overs remain

Another over from Lewis Gregory safely negotiated by Ryan ten Doeschate who picks up a couple of runs.

The former Essex captain has 24 off 86 balls. A resilient and potentially match-winning knock from the Dutchman.

  19. Essex 143-5published at 16:17 British Summer Time 27 September 2020

    19 overs remain

Jack Leach rattles through a maiden, Adam Wheater blocking everything in sight.

Where's this breakthrough coming from for Somerset?

  20. Essex 143-5published at 16:15 British Summer Time 27 September 2020

    20 overs remain

It's all gone a bit flat for Somerset. Essex are doing the job.

A wicket would of course change things hugely!
