England are employing Brendon McCullum-like fields to the left-handers. It's very attacking, and something you don't always see in one-day cricket, but England can afford to be attacking at 21-3.

  2. SL 21-3published at 5.2 overs

"Very nice junior, four down now" growls Jonny Bairstow behind the stumps as Sam Curran steams in. His second ball clips the shoulder of Charith Asalanka's bat but it doesn't carry to the cordon.

I can confirm there are still people queuing outside the ground. They really need to get a shift on.

  5. SL 17-3published at 4.5 overs

It's certainly been ruthless so far, Martin. David Willey raps Dhananjaya de Silva high on the pads with the third ball of the over and his appeal his vociferous. However, the umpires aren't interested. De Silva responds by biffing Willey back over the top for four - a confident shot given the situation.

Martin Davies: Got to question the decision to bowl first against such weak opposition. Would be pretty disappointed if I was a ticket holder, could be over in a couple of hours!

It's good bowling but the shot selection is poor. It's a rebuilding job for Sri Lanka now who need to get those this tricky period.

  10. wicket

    Nissanka b S Curran 5 (SL 12-3)

That shot was not so exquisite from the Sri Lanka opener as Sam Curran snaffles his third wicket. The left-armer with a textbook dismissal, swinging the ball into the right-hander and Nissanka played it too early and the ball clatters into his stumps.

Here's that cover drive which James Anderson described as "exquisite".

  12. SL 11-2published at 3.0 overs

New man Dhananjaya de Silva gets himself off the mark by clipping David Willey through mid-wicket. It's a rebuilding job for the next few overs for the tourists.

Sam Curran is the first England bowler to take two wickets in his opening over in a one-day international since James Anderson against New Zealand at Lord's in May 2013.

  17. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 1.4 overs

    A Fernando lbw b S Curran 2 (SL 6-2)

It was plumb in front. Fernando burns a review after getting himself in a tangle trying to work a swinging delivery from Sam Curran into the leg side. Sri Lanka 6-2 and all sorts of trouble.

  18. Umpire reviewpublished at 13:12 British Summer Time 1 July 2021

It's all happening. Another review as Sam Curran hits Avishka Fernando. This looks plumb.

Good bowling from Sam Curran. He usually swings the ball away from the bat with the new ball but he nipped that one back in and it's a great wicket for England.
