An interesting take from both Deep Dasgupta and Michael Vaughan. England will definitely need early wickets tomorrow.

That just about brings things to a close for this live text commentary. I'll see you for the start of play on Friday.

In the meantime, you can read my colleague Stephan Shemilt's report from day one here...

If England can get a couple of early wickets tomorrow then the game could have a different outlook.

I'll be brutally honest - today showed that we've got trouble coming ahead.

If you take Jimmy Anderson out of the attack today, and Stuart Broad is out already, that is what England have got. They've got Chris Woakes to come back, and hopefully Jofra Archer, Ben Stokes and Olly Stone, but we're just starting to see the prominence of how great Anderson and Broad are.

If you take Anderson out the England team today looked OK.

That brought India skipper Virat Kohli to the crease and it looked like he and KL Rahul would see the tourists to the close. However, Ollie Robinson struck late on to remove Kohli.

England did pick up the wickets of Rohit Sharma and Cheteshwar Pujara in the afternoon session, both to James Anderson.

Rohit Sharma played fluently en route to 83. But the day belonged to KL Rahul, who got his name on the honours board with a fine unbeaten hundred.

Under cloudy skies, and following a delay due to showers, Joe Root won the toss and elected to bowl first. England were wicketless in a morning session which was rain affected and lunch was taken with India 46-0.

Rishabh Pant is having some throwdowns on the outfield. Imagine if he gets going tomorrow...

It's been a chastening day for England. There will be some weary bodies and minds. But the next two batsmen are left-handers who play in an attacking style, and then there are the four seamers.

There is light at the end of the tunnel for England, but they will have to bat well and bat long.

The clouds were low and there was mizzle this morning, and there was movement there. The pace of the pitch surprised us all, I think we expected more pace and carry. It has been quite a slow wicket.

Sometimes you just have to give credit to the other team. The opening partnership nullified the new ball. They didn't play any shots, they didn't go chasing, they waited for the odd ball on the hip.

I'm inclined to agree with Aggers. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

I still think it was the right decision this morning. It was a definite bowl-first day.

A penny for Joe Root's thoughts. Should he have batted first after winning the toss?

Ajinkya Rahane was looking for the cover boundary there!

It has been a day that has been dominated and controlled by KL Rahul. India are in control, and they'll be back tomorrow to bat on a day where better batting weather is forecast.

Ajinkya Rahane pushes a little tentatively at wide one from Sam Curran off the last ball of the day, but he survives.

India close on 276-3. KL Rahul will resume tomorrow on 127 not out.

  17. Ind 276-3published at 89.4 overs

Ajinkya Rahane undoes the velcro on his gloves then does it up again. Sam Curran, round the wicket, arrows a fuller one at him but it's going wide and the India batter leaves it. KL Rahul has his helmet off at the other end - he's signalled his intention of these last two balls.

Final over of the day will be via left-arm seam of Sam Curran.

Ollie Robinson has a great ability to move the ball both ways. He always looks to hit the top of off stump and that is part of the reason that he has used four reviews in this series.

England do tend to gamble on their reviews - it is meant to be there for the one that you know is out.

  20. Ind 275-3published at 88.6 overs

Ajinkya Rahane struck on the pad by Ollie Robinson but an end-of-day appeal is as underwhelming as you would imagine. Joe Root not in the mood to burn his final review.
