Jos Buttler is the new batter.
This is a tricky time to come in with the new ball just eight balls away.
England still trail by 135...

It may not have come off as quickly as Jonny Bairstow thought. He played really well and it was an excellent partnership with Joe Root. But it is a big blow and will now expose the lower order to the new ball.

The short-pitched ploy has worked. It looked like Bairstow was through the shot too quickly.
Bairstow c Kohli b Siraj 57 (Eng 229-4)
No, no, no. The short-ball tactic works!
Mohammed Siraj goes round the wicket, looking to cramp Jonny Bairstow for room, and it works. Bairstow can't resist trying to pull, but it catches the glove and loops up for a simple catch for Virat Kohli at slip.
Bairstow is gutted. He is sloping off and can only manage a half-hearted bat raise to an appreciative Lord's crowd.
All but one of Mohammed Siraj's balls since lunch have been short...

That is the first one today that has spun.
Ravindra Jadeja is absolutely rattling through his overs here. They'd be even quicker if he didn't overstep from time to time.
The extra ball is a good one too. It grips a little bit and spins past the edge of Jonny Bairstow. Rishabh Pant whips the bails off but Bairstow hadn't moved a jot.

Ashwin vs Root was a missed opportunity.

Better from Jonny Bairstow as he plays another pull down to move to 57.
Joe Root keeps the strike with a single that England absolutely burgle with mid-on fast asleep and on his heels.

That is good cricket - and good theatre. Siraj is charging in and testing the middle of the pitch. He's giving Jonny Bairstow plenty to think about.

He got lucky. That was a miscue but it didn't go to hand.
Eeeh, this short-pitch bowling is making for some uncomfortable viewing at the moment.
Jonny Bairstow misjudges one from Siraj slightly, largely because the ball doesn't quite get up enough. He ends up copping one on the shoulder blade.
He pulls the next ball, far from convincingly, just past the reach of a diving Rishabh Pant, and picks up four.

He's a canny customer.

That over from Jadeja last about a minute and a half.
A single apiece for Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow keeps the scoreboard ticking along.
There are four overs till the new ball. That is going to be crucial either way.

This morning was the third wicketless session that England have batted through this summer.
Joe Root is going to take on the pull by the looks of it. He picks up a single down to fine leg.
Away from Lord's, Bruno Fernandes has just got his hat-trick for Man Utd against Leeds. He's my fantasy captain this week, so today can only go one way from here...

Root has a chance of back-to-back Saturday hundreds. There's something special about a Test match Saturday.
Mohammed Siraj has started with three shorter balls to Joe Root. That was probably about Plan P befoer the Test.
Root has almost clothed a couple of them to Rishabh Pant.
