KL Rahul's dismissal in the first over set the tone for the whole day. It was a poor shot and India never really regained composure. And then first over from Sharma - two no-balls and a wide. It's been a really bad day for India.

In case you're just joining us - here's an overview of the day:

    • Virat Kohli won the toss and chose to bat first
    • India are bowled out for 78 in 40.4 overs, with James Anderson taking 3-6 and Craig Overton 3-14
    • England reach 120-0 at close with Haseeb Hameed and Rory Burns unbeaten on 60 and 52 respectively

A perfect day of Test cricket for England.

You could see it in Jimmy Anderson's eyes. He knew England needed to get three or four wickets for them to get back into the series. England had no other option than to win that first session.

At the other end Rory Burns looked in good touch again.

He was in good nick against New Zealand earlier in the summer, but was also under pressure in this Test after scores of 0, 18, 49 and 0 in this series so far.

He will return on 52 in the morning.

England bowler Craig Overton on Sky Sports: "It's been a great day for us and topped off by being none down overnight. It's good for us bowlers to get some rest and be ready to go when we're back out there.

"We know they're a good bowling attack, we know it will still be hard tomorrow, so we need to work hard to bat them out of the game.

"Obviously we did get quite emotional during day five at Lord's so we spoke about sticking to the basics, sticking to what we do well and we did that today.

"As a bowler you always want to bowl, but it felt quite humid this morning. I don't think it was a bad toss to lose and we capitalised on that."

From there it was over to the England openers.

It was another new-look partnership - the 22nd since Sir Andrew Strauss retired - in Haseeb Hameed and Rory Burns. An unbroken 120 is a pretty good way to start.

Haseeb Hameed is unbeaten on 60 overnight, in just his second Test after a five-year break from the international game.

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

England were excellent. When the ball is moving, I have no concern about an England bowling attack. What really impressed me was the batting. On any wicket over the last few years, we generally feel England will be 30-3 but today then went out and played with clarity and control.

    It's been the perfect day.

James Anderson on TMS: "We had a really low week at Lord's, certainly the last day, but we had a good few days off to let that pass and concentrate on good things we did. We played well for four days there and came here hungry and ready to show fight.

"We did that with the ball, the whole attack did really well. Then the two guys with the bat showed so much skill and fight.

"We knew it's an important Test so wanted to start well. Losing the toss and choosing to bat which is always tricky. We weren't sure how the wicket was going to play. I thought we adjusted to conditions really well. We got seam and swing movement, and we asked questions and got our rewards.

"I still feel fresh. After the fist two Tests, bowling a lot of overs, it is nice to have an innings or two to get some rest, especially when the Tests are so close together."

Craig Overton and Sam Curran then took four wickets in six balls to leave India 67-9, before Overton wrapped up the India innings three overs later.

A 35-run partnership between Ajinkya Rahane and Rohit Sharma threatened to pull India back into it, but Ollie Robinson had the former dismissed on the stroke of lunch, before having Rishabh Pant caught behind.

In the first half of the day batting seemed practically impossible. In the second half it seemed really comfortable.

Let's not forget that England and Joe Root lost the toss at 10:30 BST this morning.

He wasn't unhappy about that at the time because he was unsure about batting or bowling.

He will be delighted. England bowled superbly, and have batted with excellent discipline and restraint to reach the close with all 10 wickets in hand.

A lovely touch from Rory Burns.

He lets Haseeb Hameed lead the England pair off.

Hameed will resume on 60 not out in the morning, and Burns 52.

    Eng 120-0; lead by 42

    All going on!

It is the full fast yorker from Mohammed Siraj and India appeal. England scamper a single, before an overthrow allows them to pick up two.

What a day for England! They have bowled India out for 78 and then reached 120-0. They lead by 42.
