My word, it has been a slog for India this morning. They were rocked back by the early wickets, and they haven't really been given very much to hit at all.

  2. Ind 53-3published at 25 overs

    Rohit 14, Rahane 16

Craig Overton concedes his first runs from the final ball of his third over - tickled down to the fine leg boundary for four by Rahane.

    It brings up India's fifty.

Rohit Sharma has scored at a strike-rate of 42 in his four Tests against England and New Zealand this summer. Previously in his career his strike-rate had been 58.

His 11 off 60 balls is his fewest in 35 innings in Test cricket, where he has faced at least 60 balls.

  4. Ind 49-3published at 24 overs

Ollie Robinson strikes Rohit on the pad, the slips go up but nothing from the bowler. High, probably.

It's been a monumental effort from Rohit - 14 from 74 balls when wickets have been falling around him.

  5. Ind 49-3published at 23.1 overs

Ollie Robinson replaces Curran and is greeted by a lovely cover drive from Rohit Sharma that brings him a couple.

Robinson didn't do much this morning with his four overs so he has a great chance now to just sneak England another wicket before lunch.

It looks like Ajinkya Rahane is starting to want to play a couple more shots. I wonder if he needs to be a bit more watchful.

  7. Ind 47-3published at 23 overs

    Rohit 12, Rahane 12

Another maiden from Craig Overton, although Rahane is playing at every ball, pretty much. They definitely look comfortable out there.

That is sore. It must be very sore for the captain to run off.

He is cradling it like a baby.

  9. Ind 47-3published at 22.1 overs

Craig Overton gets an edge from Rahane, but it drops short of Joe Root at slip who takes a nasty blow to the thumb.

And he worryingly leaves the field. Please be OK, Joe. Please.

The pitch looks a good one to bat on. England have bowled beautifully, but the pitch looks brown and dry.

If India don't lose another wicket in this session then you think it will get better to bat on.

  11. Ind 47-3published at 22 overs

    Rohit 12, Rahane 12

It's gone pretty quiet out there, although Jonny Bairstow livens it up with a very optimistic lbw appeal all by himself from Curran's penultimate ball.

Two no balls from Curran in that over.

The three batters will be disappointed with the way that go out, potentially chasing deliveries that they shouldn't have been.

  13. Ind 44-3published at 21.2 overs

Rahane clips Sam Curran off his hips for an easy boundary.

Batting looks a lot easier now. Whether that's just because Jimmy Anderson's not bowling, I'm not sure.

  14. Ind 40-3published at 21 overs

And his first over is a maiden. Nothing spectacular, and no alarming pace as of yet, but it keeps the pressure on.

Moeen Ali is replaced after two overs by Craig Overton.

  16. Ind 40-3published at 20 overs

    Rohit 12, Rahane 7

Nearly! Sam Curran beats Rohit Sharma's bat yet again with a bit of swing. He's bowled well this morning, in all fairness, keeping the run rate down to back up Jimmy Anderson's efforts.

It has been a really good first session for England. They needed it to get their confidence and belief back after the last Test.

    Vic Marks
Former England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

I was happy for Moeen Ali to have a couple of exploratory overs but there has been nothing there to suggest he should stay on, so I would turn to Craig Overton now.

  19. Ind 39-3published at 19 overs

The batters seem happy to just nudge Moeen Ali around for singles. No real risks taken and not much happening for the spinner yet, unsurprisingly.

There is just a little danger of England losing their grip on the game here.
