    Lead by 300

Moeen Ali works a couple down to fine leg to take England's lead to 300.

When I rocked up at 10:30 BST yesterday morning I didn't expect England to lead by 300 on the first innings.

That four took Root to 500 runs for the series, from just five innings.

Jadeja gives more of a wince than a smile. You just can't bowl to Joe Root at the moment.

  4. Eng 375-5published at 115 overs

    Lead by 297

Joe Root has been stretching in between overs. Either loosening up his back, some cramp, or his knees like last week at Lord's. You can hardly blame him, he's been out there nearly six hours now.

It doesn't stop him getting down and playing a reverse sweep to the boundary, and then pinching a quick single. Root is looking to book his place on the plane for the T20 World Cup in October here, too.

That's vintage Mo. It's graceful and effortless. When it works, it looks delightful.

  6. Eng 368-5published at 114 overs

    Lead by 290

    Glorious!

Moeen Ali picks up his first boundary with a beautiful looking cover drive.

It made a gorgeous sound too.

  7. Eng 363-5published at 113.3 overs

    Lead by 285

Moeen Ali gets off the mark with a thick inside edge down to fine leg.

Joe Root could win a penalty shootout for England.

    What has that hit?

There are screams of excitement from the close India fielders, but it is spilled at slip, after it loops over Rishabh Pant, anyway.

Mohammed Shami has found some good rhythm here and batting doesn't look as easy now.

  11. Eng 360-5published at 112 overs

    Lead by 282

Moeen Ali is the new batter, and he has a tentative prod at Mohammed Shami to end the over. Shami has been superb today.

It is getting pretty gloomy over Headingley, despite the floodlights being on.

The players have taken drinks at the fall of that wicket.

While we wait for play to restart you can watch how Jonny Bairstow got out.

Joe Root is lying on his back, knees up, rolling them from side to side. No wonder he needs a stretch and a lie-down - he's been batting all year.

It was a loose delivery, on his legs, and all Buttler could do was flick it straight to the fielder.

This situation was set up for him, but he couldn't get going.

    Soft!

Jos Buttler times this flick really well, but he hits it straight down the throat of Ishant Sharma at square leg. He can barely believe it.

England have lost two wickets for just 10 runs, but their lead is a mammoth 282.

  16. Eng 360-4published at 111.2 overs

    Four!

First boundary for Jos Buttler as he works the ball through the gap in the slip cordon and away to the boundary.

The camera pans to a young lad extravagantly signalling the four. Love to see it.

I don't want to get ahead of myself but surely Root is an absolute guarantee for winning SPOTY this year. He'll end the year top of the Test batting rankings, a 3-1 series win against India and a 5-0 series win Down Under.

A single apiece for Jos Buttler and Joe Root keeps the scoreboard ticking along.

There are a minimum of 20 overs left in the day.
