"This has been a fluctuating series, the nature of which was reflected on a chaotic and, at times, bizarre opening day...." is the verdict of my colleague Stephan Shemilt and you can read his report from day one here...

Finally, a quick reminder you can watch the highlights right now on Today at the Test on BBC Two and also via the iPlayer.

Finally India got a ball full to Joe Root. It was the easiest 21 he has scored all series - all at that high-pad height. You have got to hang in there. Only 9% of his runs have come down the ground. That tells you India have bowled too short.

India got the big wicket they wanted at the end of the day when Umesh Yadav removed Joe Root's off stump with one that nipped back.

Nightwatchman Craig Overton and Dawid Malan will resume on day two with England 53-3.

However, India fought back with a brilliant counter-attacking knock from Shardul Thakur, who hit the fastest half-century at The Oval in Test cricket - beating a record held by Ian Botham since made one in 32 balls in 1986.

India's tail were blown away after his departure but Thakur's knock helped boost India's total to 191 all out.

So, before we leave you here's a quick recap of what's happened on day one of the fourth Test.

  9. 'Important for me to play such an innings'published at 18:53 British Summer Time 2 September 2021

India's Shardul Thakur, speaking to Sky Sports, on breaking Ian Botham's record for the fastest Test fifty at The Oval: "I was not aware about it but it is always good to be on the scoreboard. It is good to be compared with the greats of the game.

"When Rishabh got out it was important for me to play such an innings. Either you can be patient or if it is in your slot hit it. At the end of the day you have to score runs.

"Whatever runs you score in the first innings is going to count. We have a chance and the game is equally poised."

Malan looked excellent. He just looks like he's settled back into Test match cricket with a great deal of confidence, so that's a good sign.

At tea time, I thought India were completely out of this Test match. Well, they've won that last session with Thakur's innings and those three wickets. The game's in the balance.

  11. 'In the balance'published at 18:48 British Summer Time 2 September 2021

England's Chris Woakes speaking to Sky Sports about England's day: "A relatively good one still. To bowl out a team for 190 is job done. To lose three tonight keeps it in the balance."

On his return to Test cricket: "I was a little bit nervous as you usually are playing Test cricket in front of a full house. I haven't done that for a while. Getting Sharma out early settled the nerves.

"I was always unsure how it would go but found nice rhythm early on. I was a little shocked how well it came out at the start. I am sure I will be sore in the morning but I am glad for the pains. It has been a while."

England bowled very well - very disciplined lines - and, compared to the last Test match, there were some genuinely good deliveries for Rohit Sharma and Pujara's wickets.

A little bit of error in judgement for KL Rahul and Virat again, but I wouldn't be too harsh. But at this level, the kind of talent and experience that India has, you would expect them to see out those kind of deliveries and you know this bowling attack is going to bowl you good deliveries.

Shardul Thakur's runs are so important at this time. We're talking about India still being in this game and it's because of that innings.

Laugh, and grow fat: Had a feeling that was going to happen. 191 looking like a very good score now.

It's always easy up here saying the batting is poor, but we know at The Oval you get true bounce. I haven't seen any balls keep low or bounce too much. You've got to expect a bit of movement when the clouds are around.

It's been a very good day for bowling. The bowlers have been very good. But it's been a poor day for the craftmanship of Test match batting. You can't tell me, with the talent in these two sides, that someone shouldn't be getting a big score on that pitch.

I don't know if the confidence is gone or if the minds are a bit tired from a long series. I'm trying to give them all the excuses in the world, but I can't - it was a poor day for batting on both sides.

*SOUND ON*. The best shot of England's innings today came from Dawid Malan. Does anyone know who makes his bats?

He'll be vital cog for England tomorrow, you sense.

That was most definitely England's day for the most part, bowling India out for 191. But in the last hour India just fought back, Jasprit Bumrah taking two quick wickets before Umesh Yadav chopped Root in half with a beauty.

They are right back in this game.
