I'd say with Root's wicket, this game is in the balance.

I'm glad has Root gone, the series was a bit predictable.
Tim, Leighton Buzzard
Just seen the replay. Joe Root can hardly believe it as he is out as he looks back and sees the furniture rearranged.
Craig Overton is in as a nightwatchman as Ollie Pope hovers about nervously on the England balcony hoping he won't have to come out.
Overton gets himself off the mark with a single.

That is a huge, huge wicket.
India hadn't been bowling full enough to Joe Root but that was just a little fuller. It is a big, big moment. Kohli knows that could open up the game.

Root has been bowled by an absolute cracker! The Indians are jubilant.
Root b Yadav 21 (Eng 52-3)
HUGE! Fast, quick, nipping back in at Joe Root and he's been bowled by Umesh Yadav! A massive blow for England just before close of play.
Yadav jumps in the air and punches it in delight.
Root and Malan take some time to have a chat in the middle, as we come in to the final 10 minutes of the day.

The one thing I think of when I see Malan's name is experience. He knows his game. Players like James Vince were written off so quickly but actually, when you look at England's line up now there's a lot of maturity in there, especially when you bring Ben Stokes back in.
Mohammed Siraj looks a little downbeat compared to his usual effervescent self. None of the charisma, and histrionics, which normally accompany his spells.
England ticking along nicely, with a single from Dawid Malan off Siraj's over. No more wickets will be their modus operandi from here.

England may as well open with Bairstow and Butler, at least there's a chance of a few on the board before we're two down after a couple of overs! And the crowd would have something to look forward to.

Rishabh Pant is being treated for cramp, it looks like. How can that be possible, he's hardly done anything today!
It's another day of Test cricket which has ebbed and flowed. We have a momentary break in play at The Oval.

These two have offered a nice bit of stability, but also scoring at a good rate and nullified that excitement from India who were on the charge.
India 191
Relatively unthreatening over from Shardul Thakur. Joe Root and Dawid Malan happy to work the ball into the gaps
Here's one of Root's boundaries from moments ago.
A lazy half-volley from Mohammed Siraj on the pads of Dawid Malan who tucks that away through the mid-wicket boundary with ease.

Siraj hasn't got his line right. You can bowl balls like that all day at top level batsmen and they will punish you every single time.
India 191
Mohammed Siraj gives Joe Root a freebie on his hips which he clips off for four. Easy as you like for the England skipper who is 17 off 16 balls.

It's been an interesting session for England, they've had to counter the two quick wickets. But it just feels like things have mellowed slightly so if England get through to the end of play unscathed, they'll have a nice little platform going into tomorrow.
Dawid Malan looking increasingly comfortable now. He opens the face of his bat a touch and guides one from Shardul Thakur through third man for four.
That was well controlled.

That's the best shot we've seen from an England batter in this innings.
