  1. Eng 30-2published at 10 overs

Dawid Malan is bouncing up and down on his knees as Jasprit Bumrah runs into bowl with that familiar clunking action of his. Bumrah always makes me think of the Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz, if he was a fast bowler.

Final ball of Bumrah's over is slightly overpitched and the ball makes a delicious crack off Malan's bat as he drives it gracefully through the covers for four.

Two boundaries for Joe Root off Umesh Yadav.

Root gets his nose over the top of one and clips it for four off his legs. Two balls later he cuts it clinically through point for another.

In the pavilion, the bottom tier, around the sightscreen is a tricky place to sit. Very easy to disrupt play if you stand up at the wrong time, or move to the wrong place. There a team of men with 'Screen Team' on the back of their jackets. Their job is to sniff out troublesome movement. If you even think of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, they pounce. "Sit down, sir! Sit down! SIT DOWN!" They are like the secret service. But, you know, for cricket.

A period of relative calm, here, following the dismissal of both England openers by Jasprit Bumrah.

  6. Eng 17-2published at 7.5 overs

Jasprit Bumrah rolls his tongue around his mouth between deliveries as he ponders strategies to Dawid Malan.

He strays on to the left-hander's legs, though, and he clips it to pick up a couple more.

A ball later and a drive from Malan races through third man for four.

  7. Eng 11-2published at 7 overs

Dawid Malan leaves, hides the bat behind his pad, and blocks as Umesh Yadav clocks up five dots round the wicket to the England left-hander.

Malan gloves one round the corner to add a single to the total.

Andrew Morris: Threatening mockers here, but I couldn't think of two better England batters that I'd want in this situation than Malan & Root.

  9. Eng 10-2published at 5.4 overs

India's slip cordon crouch down in sync as Jasprit Bumrah angles one in to Joe Root.

The England skipper must moisturise, though, and he plays it with deftly soft, silky hands. He turns and watches the ball streak away through the vacant third man region for England's first boundary.

Joe Root and Dawid Malan both at the crease now.

The latter nervously hangs his bat out to one from Umesh Yadav, prompting yelps and whoops of encouragement from India's slip cordon. A maiden over.

Virat Kohli cups his hands together and shouts: "They hate runs on the board lads, they hate runs on the board."

Bumrah rushes you. His action - all of a sudden the ball is on you. That did for Burns as well. The ball was on to both of them quickly.

    Hameed c Pant b Bumrah 0

A lovely seam presentation from Jasprit Bumrah and he draws Haseeb Hameed into cutting one that is too short, too quick and too good. Rishabh Pant steps in front of first slip to gather the catch.

    Burns b Bumrah 5 (Eng 5-1)

Rory Burns plays defensively with an angled bat at a delivery from Jasprit Bumrah which just nips off the pitch. The ball takes the inside edge and he plays on to his own stumps.

Burns turns his head in frustration. Bumrah gives him a glare as a send off.

  20. Eng 5-0published at 2.3 overs

A not altogether unappealing square drive from Rory Burns off Umesh Yadav brings him three more runs. India won't mind that, though.
