This is the shot that brought up Ollie Pope's fifty.
Just needed to help it on its way.

Another change. Here's Jasprit Bumrah again.
Moeen Ali helps one around the corner fine for four leg byes. A crisp cover drive looks good but is gathered up by the fielder at cover.
England creeping ever closer to India's total.

Eleanor Ida Rose: England's middle order is just as much of an issue as the openers. Not one middle-order pairing can be counted on to stay there when England are in a bind. The rate at which the likes of Jonny Bairstow, Jos Buttler, Moeen Ali etc give away their wickets is nothing short of criminal.

Shardul Thakur is back into the attack. Ollie Pope cuts his first ball backward of square on the offside for a single.
Thakur then bangs one in short but Ali is not ruffled. He sees out the rest of the over with a couple of regulation defensive strokes. All fairly comfortable.
Dare I say it, but England have recovered well from the loss of Bairstow.

Mark Burt: For this England team to get a first-innings lead would be an achievement. Any team with only one Test win in eight is very average as is this batting display.
Here is the first wicket to go this afternoon. Mohammed Siraj trapping Jonny Bairstow in front for 37.

Ali 4 Pope 52
Bairstow wasn’t happy with some stewards in orange and yellow jackets moving behind the bowler's arm at the Pavilion End.
Understandable, really.
Moeen Ali sees out the rest of the over. He just needs to play the supporting role here and let Ollie Pope do his stuff.

Pope has looked so good. He has been very compact and very solid.

A wonderful moment for Ollie Pope. He has played beautifully.
Just as I say that, Mohammed Siraj angles one down leg and Ollie Pope clips it fine off his pads for four.
Wonderful innings from Pope as he gets a warm applause from his home crowd.
England will need this to just be the start, though.
That Bairstow wicket has really brought the game to life. There was a bit of a post-lunch lull but India are looking chirpy.
Ravindra Jadeja bowls another maiden. Tense stuff.

Stuart Mitchell: Bairstow gets in, Bairstow gets out and so it goes on. Still not a Test cricketer in my books. Lucky to be playing in this series.
WeaklingChild: Ah. A typical Bairstow score. Along with a collapse, one of the greatest English cricket traditions.
Adam Savoury: 30 and out. Classic Bairstow.
Jonny Bairstow is STILL not happy. He's got himself a coffee and is having a sit down on the balcony, chuntering to himself.
Back in the middle, Ollie Pope - three off 50 - remains watchful, driving the final ball of Mohammed Siraj's over straight to the man at cover.

Something has gone on. You can see the stewards talking on that side of the ground. I wonder what has happened to Jonny over there.

That was Bairstow's 10th quarter century this year in 14 Test innings. Only once has he reached fifty.

Moeen Ali is the next man to the crease and he is off the mark with a little nudge around the corner off Ravindra Jadeja that goes just wide of leg slip for four.
Jonny Bairstow isn't happy. He is seen having a stern word with a steward just outside the dressing room. Perhaps something to do with the movement behind the bowler's arm a few deliveries earlier?

It was a decent ball. It was the first one we have seen move for some time. For long periods Siraj looks innocuous but from nowhere he gets late movement.
