Bairstow lbw b Siraj 37 (Eng 151-6)
It's hitting! All the reds go up on the DRS and Bairstow to go.
India had barely threatened after lunch but they are energised now.

I don't think there is an inside edge. Kohli was adamant.
Mohammed Siraj hits Jonny Bairstow on the pads. Up goes the finger, Bairstow instantly sends it upstairs.

Nick Hall: Time to go big Ollie, forget the twentysomethings - game changing innings right here. No jinx intended.

So far this has been the best I have seen of Ollie Pope in a Test shirt. OK he got that hundred in South Africa but the pressure he found himself in, the pressure on his place in the side... I have not seen those big drives. He has been compact and played straight.
In this situation you have to capitalise. It is perfectly set for a big score.
Ravindra Jadeja continues, no real turn so far. Plenty of chatter from Rishabh Pant behind the stumps though.
Pope works on into the onside for a single. Bairstow then returns the favour to bring up England's 150 and spark a smattering of applause around the Oval.

There's a few spectators 'working from home' at the Test. I've heard one man offer someone a job in Belfast, the lunchtime stairwells were packed with people on calls. One chap even had his laptop open on a crate of beer.
Bairstow 36 Pope 45
England are rotating the strike well here and not letting the Indian bowlers settle.
Mohammed Siraj looks slightly irritated as he has to wait while Ollie Pope adjusts his shoelaces.
They will not be rushed, these two.

This tells you Bumrah may be a bit tired. Go back to the omission of Ashwin. You need bowlers who can continually build pressure. So far it has only looked like two bowlers who can take wickets in this India attack.

Virat Kohli turns to Ravindra Jadeja straight after lunch - maybe looking for a bit of control at one end?
Pope is watchful early on, but eventually manages to squirt one towards deep backward point for three.

Bumrah and Umesh look like they are going to have to do a lot of work. If England can see Bumrah off they should be able to get a decent lead.
Bairstow 36 Pope 39
Pope gets his first run after lunch with a thickish edge down to deep backward point. Jonny Bairstow then pushes one through the covers and they scamper through for two.
Solid start.
Bit of chatter between Jonny Bairstow and Virat Kohli as they take to the pitch. I'm sure it was all friendly.
Mohammed Siraj will get us started again.
We have said this a lot in this series, but, I'd say this is a pretty crucial next hour coming up. If Bairstow and Pope get going they could start building a useful lead. Fall early and that lower order could tumble quite quickly.

All this praise of one good innings from Bairstow doesn't change the fact he's only averaged over 35 once in the nine calendar years he's played in Tests. Frustratingly inconsistent. But then, so is most of this batting line-up.

Ollie Pope was very watchful early on, but he too led the counter-attack.
File this cover drive under 'textbook'.
It was all looking a bit shaky for England early on, but some wonderful hitting from Jonny Bairstow has steadied the ship.
Let's head to Dhaka briefly and New Zealand have lost two early wickets as they chase 142 to beat Bangladesh in the second T20 and square the series.
Tom Blundell was stumped by Nurul Hasan off the bowling of Mahedi Hasan for 10, before fellow opener Rachin Ravindra was clean bowled by Shakib Al Hasan for 10.
Mohammad Naim had earlier top-scored with 39 and captain Mahmudullah added 37 to help Bangladesh reach 141-6.
You can find the full scorecard over here.
Cheers, Tim - too kind!
Well that was a fascinating seesaw morning session. Jonny Bairstow told BBC TMS before play that he wanted to make an impact on this Test and he has done just that, ably supported by Ollie Pope.
The break in play has probably come at a good time for India. Time to regroup and go again.
