It's not to be I'm afraid, Jam. England could have done with a nice little innings from Craig Overton to frustrate India but he's on his way back to the pavilion.

He plays and misses at one from Umesh Yadav then next ball is drawn into an attempted cut to a wider one and edges to Virat Kohli at first slip.

Ollie Pope the new man in for England.

jambarrell: Rather like a nightwatchman who can bat - great call on Craig Overton, really hoping he can stick around a bit this morning.

Optimism can be found in deciphering the following riddle. C. Overton is essentially "Cover Ton" so Craig is going to get a century by playing exclusively cover drives.

Mohammed Siraj looked a little weary yesterday, not the agitating firebrand we'd seen in the previous few Tests. Perhaps Virat Kohli has given him the ball first up to shake him into life a little.

Dawid Malan looks organised with his defence. Sorted the bookshelves into alphabetical order type of organised.

    A maiden over first up.

  5. 'This is a huge session within the game'published at 11:01 British Summer Time 3 September 2021

Jonny Bairstow to BBC TMS: "We come back with slightly different overhead conditions this morning, it's a case of getting through this first hour and going on from there.

"Normally the Oval Test is the last Test of the summer so the pitch looks different, there's a little bit in it, a bit more seam movement as well. It's going to be a great challenge for us today but that's what we play cricket for. This morning session is a huge session within the game.

"The body is good, I really enjoyed it. It was quite challenging out there a lot of wobble and swing after the bat, but to get a few catches was pleasing

"I feel good. I've been getting starts with the bat throughout the series and it feels good to be able to get on and make a telling contribution in in this game."

India's players have a group huddle with Virat Kohli, jazzy shades on top of his India cap, at the heart of it giving a few final words of encouragement to his players.

Vineet Jacob: This England batting line-up will be under pressure now with Joe Root already uprooted. Now Dawid Malan and Ollie Pope are on comebacks while Jonny Bairstow and Moeen Ali are under scrutiny. All of them are playing for their places in the team. It is not going to be easy for them now.

BBC Weather's Simon King on TMS: "The cloud is thinning and breaking. The sun is just poking through but I think we will see more of it than we have seen in the past few days. As a result it will feel warmer with temperatures this afternoon expected to get up to about 21 or 22 degrees with a light easterly wind. So a lovely day for playing cricket."

It's fairly sunny at The Oval, but what's the weather forecast looking like for the rest of today?

England wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow, speaking to Sky Sports before play: "The body feels all right after keeping. It takes a bit of adapting but to get out there and have the gloves again was great. It was nice to get some catches, pleasing to get my feet moving.

"In an ideal world you'd be keeping consistently in red ball cricket but as we know that doesn't suffice. But I am happy with it. There has been a heck of lot of work with Bruce French and the other wicketkeeping coaches down the years. And you are able to go back to those basics try to stay relaxed.

"When the ball wobbles you need to stop the body tensing up. It wobbled and swung after going past the bat. It's about enjoying the challenge of it. As soon as you start worrying you get into trouble. There are not many places in the world it does it so frequently. There's a bit more bounce in the wicket also which causes different challenges."

Getting into the The Oval is a sport in itself. Crowds stream from Vauxhall Station, dicing with London buses as they cross the road. The pavements are narrow and fenced in, so you're up close and personal with the rest of those trying to find the right entrance. It's the bits of conversation that make it really interesting. "Can we take beer in". "He can't make it because his dog's ill, so we'll have to sell his ticket." "We found out. We're having a boy".

A reminder that England will resume on 53-3, 138 runs behind India's first-innings total of 191 all out.

Dawid Malan is unbeaten on 26 while nightwatchman Craig Overton has a solitary run to his name having survived eight balls last night following the dismissal of England skipper Joe Root.
