Anyway, I'm off to take my lunch now, but I shall leave you in safe hands. Hands as safe as Jack Russell's. My colleague Thomas Mallows will be the man in the hot seat for the afternoon session at The Oval.

I'm possibly guilty of being a tad hyperbolic, but I think the fate of the Test match could well hinge on this partnership between Jonny Bairstow and Ollie Pope.

Mark Thomas: At the risk of cursing them both which I sadly absolutely will, I really like Pope and Bairstow! Would love to see a massive partnership here.

Another great session of Test cricket. India were all over England but these two have got together and steadied the ship.

Well played, Ollie Pope. He has come in without any cricket behind him and has got England back into it.

  6. Lunch - Eng 139-5published at 13:04 British Summer Time 3 September 2021

Jonny Bairstow prods at one on the front foot but turns down a single. England's batsmen walk off to cautious applause.

India had the best of the early part of a fascinating morning but Bairstow and Ollie Pope have battled back well, mixing spells of attack with solid defence.

If they can get beyond India's total this afternoon and build any kind of lead it will be a valuable one. Every run will count.

Ravindra Jadeja with the last over before lunch.

He begins with a no-ball before Jonny Bairstow is happy to block out the majority of the over.

    Just one ball to survive.

Sean Dickens: Interesting listening about Bairstow, it has always seemed to me that by replacing him as keeper-batsman with Buttler they were trying to solve a problem that wasn’t there.

Just a bit of nip off the pitch from Jasprit Bumrah to one angled in at which has Jonny Bairstow twiddling and waggling his bat in the corridor of uncertainty. He just needs to get through to lunch now.

This is Ollie Pope's 13th innings of the year and now his highest score. He only has one single-figure score in that time and eight over 20 but this is the first time he has passed 35.

Ravindra Jadeja strikes Jonny Bairstow on the pad and appeals. Not out. The debate is a short one and India decline to review.

Jadeja is getting plenty of encouragement by Rishabh Pant behind the stumps. He's mischievously attempting to ruffle the feathers of England's batsmen on the stroke of lunch.

That was a delicious cover drive. Ollie Pope is looking good.

Glorious from Ollie Pope. He's offered a rare full delivery by Jasprit Bumrah and drives it through the covers, Ian Bell-esque, for four.

    About 10 minutes until lunch.

  14. Eng 129-5published at 38.3 overs

Ollie Pope playing watchfully before lunch against Jasprit Bumrah.

He isn't the first player with that surname to play for England which reminds me of an amusing anecdote I once read involving legendary sportswriter Frank Keating.

He and TV colleague Bill Grundy went off to interview legendary Brazil footballer Pele, only to be distracted by a mini pub crawl en route.

Pele made small talk before the interview, telling the pair he had just come from Rome to see the Pope. "Pope, eh?", Grundy slurred to Pele, having supped a few too many. "Might that be any relation, sir, to Mr George Pope, the balding former Derbyshire and England all-round cricketer?"

A typically quickfire over from Ravindra Jadeja. Not a great deal of turn yet. Ollie Pope nudges one for a single, to keep the strike.

Is there an official BBC policy on describing England when they do well after losing early wickets? I see they hierarchy it as Recover (30-40 runs), then Rally (50-70), then Fightback (70-plus)...

    Adam in Liverpool

No policy, Adam - just the very nature of this series that a 40-run stand seems to change the momentum significantly.

Much better lines from Shardul Thakur, with just one run taken off that over. Virat Kohli turns to spin as on comes Ravindra Jadeja from the Vauxhall End.
