The Oval hum, buzz, or whatever you want to call it, feels louder than at any previous point in this match. A different, fifth-day crowd. More chatter, excitement and expectation. It stops for a nanosecond when each ball is bowled, then carries on again. It could be very lively later on.

The introduction of Ravindra Jadeja has truly revealed the magnitude of what England need to do here. He's accurate, there's a little bit of, probably just enough, spin for him and it is difficult for England to really work the ball away.

WinViz has England at 20%, India at 29% and the draw favourite at 51%.

If India had Ashwin in their side, I wouldn't give England the slightest chance of winning.

India are continuing to hone in on the pads, and naturally then the stumps, of Haseeb Hameed. He's been equal to it so far, and keeps the strike with a guide through third for a single.

The work Andy must have done to dig that out. Fair play!

This is the first time in Test history that a batsman has been dismissed on exactly 50 in every innings of a game.

India are, unsurprisingly, swarming Dawid Malan. There's a slip, a leg slip, a silly point and a short leg.

Ravindra Jadeja is a little bit too wide, though, allowing Malan to pad away a couple of times.

This feels like a really key period of the game. The intensity has ramped up a notch or two.

This has been an innings of real grit and determination. He came in yesterday after 148 overs in the field and he has batted splendidly.

    Eng 103-1

Haseeb Hameed moves to his second half-century of the series with a flick through square leg for three. It was a full toss, and a rather poor delivery from Ravindra Jadeja.

Can Hameed keep going, unlike Rory Burns?

Incredible difference in the reaction to two consecutive deliveries. Burns got a standing ovation for reaching 50, and with it England's 100, but that was nothing compared to the explosion of noise that revealed just how many India fans are here.

What an opportunity this is for new batter Dawid Malan. This is only his second Test back in the side, and he can consolidate his place in the team for a long time with a century today.

He is greeted with a bouncer, before he is solidly in behind.

India, and naturally Virat Kohli, loved that wicket. There celebrations were animated, to the say the least.

That's a good ball. Looks like there was some reverse swing, too. If India's bowlers get the ball reversing, it becomes a completely different game.

Fifty and out for Rory Burns!

Shardul Thakur manages to do what no India bowler has managed this morning - challenge the outside edge of Burns.

It's a good delivery from Thakur, angling in towards Rory Burns and there is a tiny bit of seam movement away from Burns, who feathers through to Rishabh Pant.

Shardul Thakar is into the attack to replace Umesh Yadav, and he strays onto the hip of Rory Burns, who again flicks fine for four.

Bowl, flick, repeat at the moment this morning.

The run chase is possible, but it's just whether England truly believe. Did they come to the ground today definitely thinking that 291 was achievable? Or are they partly thinking about playing it safe?
