He has looked to be quite aggressive throughout. There was a little bit of spin - but enough - but Perera has given his wicket away. England are making inroads now.

    K Perera c Root b Bess 20 (SL 25-3)

    Hmm.

I have a lot of thoughts on this shot, and not many of them are fit for broadcast. Kusal Perera, who has been aggressive, gets down to reverse sweep his second delivery from Dom Bess, and ends up paddling it straight into the hands of Joe Root at slip. Another gift of a wicket.

    Spin!

    Here's Dom Bess.

It's about keeping your foot on the gas - the first innings is crucial.

  7. SL 25-2published at 10 overs

The third 91mph delivery from Mark Wood ends the over, and Angelo Mathews, rather unwisely, turns his back to it. He gets a nasty rap on the shoulder for his troubles.

They say try and hit high up on the bat... That is a goner. Fair play to Mark Wood - he has been bending his back.

  10. SL 25-2published at 9.5 overs

Play resumes with Angelo Mathews clipping a single past the man at short leg.

Ah! He's broken his bat! 91mph from Mark Wood, Mathews pats it down towards his feet, and that's cracked it clean in half!

Nine overs in the first hour isn't.... great, is it?

  13. SL 23-2published at 9.1 overs

Mark Wood bowls one delivery and then there's suddenly a load of people on the pitch; England want a helmet, Angelo Mathews has asked for a chest guard, and now the third umpire is appearing with water bottles and a towel.

Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

It looks like one of those pitches where people are going to be in funky fielding positions - people on drives and in strange catching positions because it is coming off the pitch pretty slowly.

    Andy Zaltzman
    Test Match Special statistician

In England's last tour of Sri Lanka in November 2018 there were seven wickets taken by pace bowlers in the three Tests that they won.

James Anderson took 1-105 in two Tests, Stuart Broad was 0-50 from his one Test, Sam Curran 1-50 in 15 overs in two Tests, while Ben Stokes took five wickets in 31 overs.

  17. SL 22-2published at 9 overs

Gosh, Stuart Broad is puce. He's really gulping and gasping for air as he walks back to his mark. It is humid out there.

Still manages to bowl a maiden, mind.

Kusal Perera continues on his merry way by thumping Sam Curran back over his head in rather ungainly fashion.

Another fine drive adds a couple of runs to the total.

Jenifer Moore: Get in! Well done Broady. Wonder if Jimmy is as mad as Stuart was in the summer to not be playing today?!
