Dom Bess has just overpitched on a few occasions.

He had the golden start getting the wicket in the first over, but he'll be the first to admit that he hasn't quite got it right to the right-handers. He's just been a bit too full, or a bit too straight in that last over to allow them to nudge singles into the on side.

Something for Sri Lanka to think about as they head in for a break.

A very good morning for England after losing the toss - but it could have been four...

  3. SL 65-3published at 23.5 overs

    Oh! A beauty!

Jack Leach gets a delivery to turn back in and straighten, completely beating Dinesh Chandimal, and it somehow misses the off stump.

My danger is I'm bad at timed naps. If I close my eyes I'll be asleep for hours, and my colleagues might not appreciate that...

Jack Leach will bowl what is likely to be the last over before lunch.

    Lunch? Breakfast? Who knows.

England will want to restrict Sri Lanka to 250-275 at most in this first innings because they'll need to get very close, if not beyond, in the first innings. Any deficit, knowing you're going to have to bat last, would be a very difficult thing for the England team.

Jack Leach took that dropped catch much better than I would have.

Dan Lawrence is having a deep moment of reflection in the field. Awful feeling.

It's a mental challenge now for Dan Lawrence, on debut. It's not a great start for the chap.

That was actually a sitter for Dan Lawrence!

  11. dropped catch

Chandimal dropped on 22published at 22 overs

    Oh, Dan Lawrence!

That is not ideal on debut. An absolute dolly has come his way at cover, a looping shot from the Sri Lanka captain that seemed to come off the toe-end of the bat, and Lawrence gets both hands to it as he moves to his left, and drops it.

Both of these players average 53 against spin - while Dinesh Chandimal averages 34 against pace and Angelo Mathews 41.

Hello. Dom Bess' first delivery takes a huge chunk out of the wicket, dust flying everywhere. Batting last on this might be interesting.

Mark Wood goes diving to his right at point to stop Dinesh Chandimal picking up a boundary before Angelo Mathews has an awkward hoick at the final delivery that lands just in front of Jack Leach.

  14. What have you missed?published at 06:19 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January 2021

Just joining us? Treated yourself to a lie-in? It serves you right - you've missed three Sri Lanka wickets.

Stuart Broad, face reddening by the minute, took two wickets in three balls - Lahiru Thirimanne nudged tamely to Jonny Bairstow at leg gully to depart for four, and Kusal Mendis edged behind to collect his fourth successive duck in Test cricket.

Off-spinner Dom Bess needed only two deliveries to make an impact, although the wicket of Kusal Perera was down largely to a horrid reverse sweep rather than anything exceptional with the ball.

From 25-3, old-timers Angelo Mathews and stand-in captain Dinesh Chandimal have at least steadied the Sri Lanka ship.

I've just stretched and my back has made the sort of noise that it very definitely shouldn't do. Maybe using my sofa as an office for 10 months hasn't been a great idea.

This is such a key partnership. They are two experienced players who know how to get Test match hundreds.

If you look at the first three dismissals Sri Lanka will be very disappointed, particularly the reverse sweep from Kusal Perera - that was a nonsense shot.

Sri Lanka have given England a really poor gift.

  17. SL 52-3published at 19 overs

Angelo Mathews is batting in a cap, which makes him ten times cooler than everyone else out there.

A flick of the wrists allows him to turn Dom Bess around the corner with ease. He looks much more comfortable against the spin.

With that boundary in the last over off Dom Bess, Dinesh Chandimal has become the 12th Sri Lankan to reach 4,000 Test runs. He's done it in his 59th Test.

  19. SL 50-3published at 18 overs

That's better from Jack Leach, finding a bit of bounce as he draws Dinesh Chandimal forward and takes the outside edge of the bat.
