A mixed bag first up from Dom Bess.

He's too short on three occasions, allowing the two left-handed openers to play it off the back foot through the covers.

He finishes better and gets a little bit of turn and grip, but Lahiru Thirimanne leaves both well.

A good, accurate, probing maiden from Stuart Broad.

He's panting, and looks absolutely exhausted, though.

Four overs is probably the limit per spell for a quick man in this heat so Sri Lanka may have just achieved their first tick by seeing off Broad's first spell.

  7. What have you missed?published at 07:30 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2021

If you've just woken from your slumber, here's what has gone down this morning in Galle...

England converted their impressive overnight 320-4 into a marginally less impressive 421 all out, with captain Joe Root last man out for 228. It was his first century since 2019, which was also a double.

Off-spinner Dilruwan Perera helped himself to 4-109 as England's middle and lower order folded somewhat, while slow left-armer Lasith Embuldeniya toiled through 45 overs for figures of 3-176.

Sri Lanka have just started the unenviable task of attempting to wipe out a first-innings deficit of 286...

    Better from Sam Curran.

He drags his length back a bit, and gets some extra bounce as a result, and draws a false drive out of Kusal Perera.

Mark Wood pats Curran on the back. That may be the last we see of Curran for a while.

    Shot!

A tiny bit of width from Sam Curran and Kusal Perera throws his hands at it and crunches it to the cover fence.

He'd edged the previous ball through the vacant gully area for four too. Joe Root might want to think about putting one in.

piemontemio: Once again Root fails to convert - his last ton in NZ was 226, and now he's out for 228: he clearly has a problem in the 220s. Needs to work on that...

This is the sixth time in their past 12 Tests that England have made 400 in their first innings. They had done so only once in their previous 23.

Stuart Broad goes over the wicket and there's a strangled appeal straight away for an lbw against Lahiru Thirimanne.

It definitely pitched outside leg, and he may have nicked it, so it didn't have a great deal going for it. Joe Root has his hands on his head all the same.

The left-hand opener then almost scoops one straight to Dan Lawrence at mid-wicket.

Not a great record admittedly. His career spans 10 years as well.

However, 22 of those Tests were against England, Australia, India and New Zealand.

Another 12 were against Pakistan and South Africa - he hasn't many chances to boost his average against lesser sides.

Nick James: Just seen Thirimanne’s Test record. Many top-order batsmen out there averaging 22 from 37 matches?

Just a single off Sam Curran's over again.

It's been a steady start from Sri Lanka - there haven't been any real scares so far.

How long before Joe Root turns to spin?

The preparation has been awful for England - they had one day of match practice - but they have been so dominant, in conditions that are so different to what they find in the UK. It has been a really good mental performance, as well as the skill level.

    A maiden from Stuart Broad.

He's got Jonny Bairstow under the lid at short leg - I say short leg, he's quite far back to be fair.

He's also got Zak Crawley at a short mid-on, just off the strip.

England are clearly expecting some uneven bounce and, as a result, some skewed edges.

  18. Rain halts India's replypublished at 07:09 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2021

Over in Brisbane, persistent rain has brought an end to the second day of the decisive final Test between Australia and India.

India are 62-2, trailing by 307, with Cheteshwar Pujara and captain Ajinkya Rahane at the crease.

Nathan Lyon, playing his 100th Test, is within three scalps of taking 400 wickets after he dismissed Rohit Sharma for 44.

Pat Cummins took the other wicket to fall, that of opener Shubman Gill.

Tidy start from Sam Curran with just a single getting Lahiru Thirimanne off the mark.

There was a little bit of movement there for the left-armer too.
