    Gone!

A very nice delivery from Asitha Fernando, holding its line and then smeaing away, and Jos Buttler's gallumphing drive ends up sending a thick outside edge through to the keeper. A very handy partnership is over.

Joe Root has hit 25 twos in this innings - so a half-century in twos. According to the Cricinfo ball-by-ball database that began in 2001, it is only the third time an England player has hit a half-century in twos.

Jonathan Trott hit 30 twos against Bangladesh at Lord's in 2010 and Alastair Cook hit 26 in the final Test in Sydney in January 2011.

Joe Root is just four runs shy of his double century. That seems to have come around very quickly...

Meanwhile, the Barmy Army guy is having a right old sing song from the Galle forte.

Joe Root has been eyeing that shot up for a while.

He almost yorked himself a few overs ago coming down the ground because he got excited, but this was the one. It was right in the slot.

    Root 196, Buttler 30

Down the wicket comes Joe Root and with a big sweep of the bat, he dispatches Dilruwan Perera over long-on for a huge six.

That brings up Perera's own century, which I suspect he won't be too pleased about.

Now, if you're up at this time in the morning, I'd say you can eat whatever you want for breakfast. Go wild, have sushi, or cake, or both.

But not a black pudding and cheese sandwich. No. You have to draw the line somewhere.

There is no pressure on these two this morning - it feels like a glorified net.

A smattering of singles from Perera's over, which, at the minute, feels like a win for Sri Lanka.

Shot! Short from Embuldeniya and treated with the relevant disdain by Jos Buttler, who leans back and absolutely pings it over cow corner for four.

Joe Root ends a very expensive over with a sweep that splits two fielders and races into the boundary.

The problem for Sri Lanka is that their key bowler, Lasith Embuldeniya, is wearing.

More short balls are creeping in and the control is going.

Four! Another reverse sweep from Jos Buttler, a ferocious swirl of the wrists, and the ball beats a valiant fielder at backward point and crashes into the boundary.

The surface looks interesting. It is seriously going to go to a minefield in the last two days so England have a right opportunity here to cash in before that happens.

    Lead by 211

Aggers touched on this yesterday but there's no better English player of spin than Joe Root. So quick and light on his feet.

This is now England's highest Test total at Galle. And there's still bags of time left in the game.

England will want to bat into the third session and maybe leave an hour to get into Sri Lanka.

If they go at a healthy rate, maybe 3.5 runs an over in each session, that will give them a decent lead maybe around the 400 mark.

  20. Eng 342-4published at 99 overs

We've just seen a compilation - is that the right word? - of poor Kusal Mendis getting clattered by Joe Root at short leg yesterday. He must have taken half a dozen hits in quick succession.

Root goes deep into his crease and drags a pull to deep mid-wicket for a couple of runs.
