Historically these are the trickiest conditions to play in with the heat, but it's the relentless nature of the humidity. That's what it is that gets you. It's probably just starting to cool down now.

The heat just hits you like an oven.

I remember Matt Prior trying to keep without pads on in an attempt to cool down, and it was a good idea until he got one on the shin. He weighed his trousers after a session and they weighed five kilos - that's how wet they were. It was incredible how much he was having to put into his body to allow him to play without cramping up.

Good shot by Mathews but England won't mind it.

  4. SL 163-3published at 57 overs

I love watching Angelo Mathews bat.

He gets up on one leg, flamingo style, and sends Jack Leach over long-on and away for four. He didn't quite get all of that, but he got enough.

I wonder if straight after tea if Joe Root could challenge Dinesh Chandimal's ego and bring a couple of men in.

He's only got a short leg and a slip, but I wonder if he could bring the mid-off up straight after tea and say 'go on then'.

It's worth the risk I think.

  6. SL 158-3published at 56 overs

On Test Match Special, Alastair Cook has just come out with the extraordinary line that "Matt Prior was the biggest sweater in our team". He's talking about not touching the ball with sweaty hands to keep it shiny - a job he did for England for a very long time.

James Anderson gives away a few runs and looks furious about it.

    Russel Arnold
Former Sri Lanka all-rounder on BBC Test Match Special

Ramesh Mendis who is due in at seven is a very good all-rounder. He's been among the runs in Sri Lanka, he's got a first-class average of over 40 and in our terms that's a very good average. He's got a high score of over 300 so he's very capable.

He's a competitor and that's the sort of player you'll see.

  8. SL 157-3published at 55 overs

Dinesh Chandimal gets things going with a sneaky single before Angelo Mathews sends a ferocious cut into the deep for a smattering of runs.

Jack Leach will carry on whirling away.

England will be telling themselves that they just want to add two wickets to this score.

I know it's a cricket cliche but suddenly 160-5 on a real flat one on day one and England would take every single day in this conditions.

They'll be desperate to get this breakthrough.

  11. SL 155-3published at 54 overs

James Anderson does what he always does - bowls a tight, tidy maiden that Angelo Mathews is content to flat bat his way through.

    Right. Cricket!

Jimmy Anderson will get things going.

The spin bowling cupboard is rather bare but these guys need to play in order to improve. Would kill for a Swann, but I have faith in Leach, who is rusty. Bess bowls far too much dross but he’ll come good. I don’t think they’ll rip through India by any means, but it’s a long-term ‘investment’.

Plenty of cricket left in the day - 34 overs, to be exact.

This pitch is dead flat - it isn’t spinning. Root is making a mess of this - should be rotating seamers at one end and spin at the other - give them something to think about - this is too easy.

There's a lot more batting for Sri Lanka to do. They are not out of the woods yet, but they are in the right direction. They've got a foundation to work from.
