Wood crunches the ball into Chandimal's thumb now. The batsman will be glad when this spell is over. Had short leg been a bit closer he may have got there.

This reminds me of the Sri Lankan wickets I played on, where it is a beauty for the first two or three days. It is the kind of wicket where I think if a player wanted to take a spinner down, you could do.
Mark Wood may look tired but Root is asking him to bowl one more. I wonder if anyone has told him Andy in Bristol thinks he's the 'Leeds United of cricket' for some extra motivation.

Ooft...
Now that's a shot! Chandimal pumps Dom Bess back over his head for a big six.
I'd say fast bowling should unsettle a batsman and if it doesn't get wickets directly it could bring them at the other end.

Bowling fast is like harvesting possession in football. What's the point in it if the end result doesn't put the ball in the onion bag or snaffle a wicket? Mark Wood is the Leeds United of cricket.
Andy, Bristol
Yes he did.
I guess they were checking whether Chandimal hit the ball into his own boot before it went to short leg but that was one of the bigger wastes of time in recent times.

Mark Wood made a polite enquiry but there is not really any excitement.
We're checking a catch at short leg. I'm pretty sure Chandimal bashed it into the ground.
For the second time in the over Wood looks utterly dismayed.
This is brilliant fast bowling. Chandimal edges one into his pad and then nearly gets his head taken off by a 90mph bouncer.

Angelo Mathews' half-century came from 89 balls with seven fours. It is his 37th score of 50 or more in Test cricket, to go with 10 centuries.

Mark Wood feels hard done by. That could have gone anywhere.
Angelo Mathews gloves a over Jos Buttler's head. The pace of Wood means it almost goes for six.
It brings up his fifty.

Sam Curran has Dom Bess' cap on top his own. He's also wearing his yellow framed sunglasses he wore in the IPL.
In the IPL they matched his yellow Chennai shirt. Today, less so.
England have a short leg in now after that blow. Wood fires one in around the rib cage but Chandimal plays it well.
Wood is blowing a bit at the end of the over.
The physio comes on but Chandimal looks to be fine. He got in a nasty position to play that. Without a helmet his nose would have been rearranged.

This has been a really good spell from Mark Wood.
