  1. Tea - SL 155-3published at 53 overs

Too short from Leach and Mathews cuts for a single.

When the spinners are bowling it looks as flat as two-week-old fizzy pop.

    That's tea.

Batsmen are allowed to look comfortable especially in the subcontinent, especially on a flat wicket, especially on day one. Classic English cricket fan, looking for any reason to condemn the 11 out there!

Is it too early for me to turn to chocolate? I've been up since 4am so it's really midday.

    Three singles from Bess' over.

    Mathews 58, Chandimal 43

Both men took five wickets in the last Test though. We shouldn't forget that.

Mathews and Chandimal just look at ease.

Bess and Leach couldn't find spin on a teacups ride. If these two are our spearhead in India we're doomed. Doomed I tell thee.

Sigh. Bess bowls five decent balls and then ends the over with a full toss that Mathews can easily whack away.

The batsman drills the ball along the ground to a fielder. Fortunately for Bess it's only a single.

Sri Lanka will be pretty happy with this session if Chandimal and Mathews make it to tea. The partnership is now worth 70.

Sri Lanka are milking the singles. It's frustrating for England and for Dom Bess, who is trying to create some pressure.

Because the spinners aren't making anything happen?

    Five singles from Bess' over.

Why is it that when our spinners don't take wickets they are rubbished, but when Wood doesn't take wickets, he is "making something happen at the other end"? English cricket just doesn't understand spin bowling, which makes me worry about the India series.

West Indies' miserable tour of Bangladesh looks likely to continue. After being bowled out for 122 in their first game, the depleted tourists were skittled for 148 in the second one-day international. Spinner Mehedi Hasan did the damage with 4-25. You can follow the Bangladesh reply here.

"Good boy, Leachy" says Jos Buttler from behind the stumps. England's left-arm spinner gets down to prevent a single off his own bowling.

A maiden to start the spell from The Nut.

In retort to Andy’s Leeds United comment... The mental focus required in Test cricket is hard enough, apply 94mph deliveries to that plus this Sri Lankan heat. I think you can safely say Mark Wood is testing the resolve of both players, which in turn brings wickets for others. You have to bowl in pairs in test cricket which doesn’t always reward both bowlers.

    Mathews 53, Chandimal 36

Both Mathews and Chandimal are batting in their blue Sri Lankan caps now. Mathews us up there with some of the best cap-wearing batsmen.

Bess twirls away but there's no real turn.

I'm surprised we haven't seen Jack Leach, especially with two right-handers in.

Wood still reaches 93mph despite the heat and the length of his spell.

At the end of the over he waves to the dressing room and trudges off. That is him done.

Chandimal, meanwhile, is getting some treatment for the blow on the thumb.
