It is all happening at Galle. The length was full and it almost yorked Mathews when he went to sweep. Huge wicket there to get the main man out.

Sri Lanka are in all sorts of trouble. If England keep calm, keep the pressure on, things will happen.

    Mathews b Bess 5 (SL 37-4)

    !!!!

Hands up if you were expecting this? Angelo Mathews goes for a sweep, misses as he tries to take the ball from outside off stump, and the ball spits out of the rough and bowls the first-innings centurion. Well, well, well.

Get one of these two now and there will be jitters in the Sri Lanka dressing room.

That took me back. I got Mark Taylor out at The Oval in a very similar way. Adam Hollioake took a very good catch.

Crawley has taken that very well. Sri Lanka will be feeling a little jittery.

    Thirimanne c Crawley b Leach 13 (SL 37-3)

    Great catch!

Short leg is not an easy place to field and Zak Crawley makes it look so, so easy, especially for such a tall fella. Lahiru Thirimanne moves forward, looking to flick Jack Leach off his pads, and the ball goes low and quickly to Zak Crawley's right. Crawley started to move in anticipation of the shot to move with the batsman and took a very, very good grab to his right. Terrific, as Thirimanne had nailed that.

When conceding a first-innings deficit of fewer than 150 runs, England have actually won eight of 12 their last matches. Most of those have been when batting first. They did it in last summer against Pakistan and that game at Headingley in 2019.

  11. SL 35-2published at 13 overs

What will Sri Lanka be looking for here? I guess the real question is how many runs can Joe Root score on his own? In this series he's been run out twice and then caught trying to push England towards a declaration target after he'd made 228.

Mathews has shown his intent. He swept his first ball and then came running down the wicket. He will be looking at a quick 35 from him.

We're into 'big wicket' territory now with Mathews in.

  17. SL 30-2published at 11 overs

Angelo Mathews sends a sweep straight into Zak Crawley's backside as he jumps to get out of the way, which must hurt. Both players laugh it off, before Mathews advances to get his way off the mark with a single.

All you have to do is pitch it on a good line and a good length. Don't mess about with your variations too much. Let the pitch do the work.

Bess lured Fernando forward. It spun and bounced. There's not a lot the batsman can do. Well done, Dom Bess.
