  1. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 10.4 overs

    O Fernando c Crawley b Bess 3 (SL 29-2)

    Gone, gone, gone!

A much better ball from Dom Bess, fuller, bringing the batsman forward, and he reaps the reward. Oshada Fernando stretches forward, trying to cover the spin, and ends up tickling the simplest of catches to Zak Crawley at short leg. Excellent.

250 would be be a lot for England to get on this wicket but with the form Joe Root is in, and how hard Sri Lanka have found it to stop him scoring, it is possible.

  3. SL 28-1published at 10 overs

A no ball from Jack Leach, before a firm drive from Oshada Fernando is stopped by a sprawling Dan Lawrence.

That's close! Fernando goes for a big yahoo outside off stump and the ball spins away from the bat, missing it by centimetres. Joe Root almost topples over, he's so excited at slip.

It has been a nice start from Jack Leach.

  5. SL 26-1published at 9 overs

A better over from Dom Bess, spearing the ball in a touch fuller, and again, Sri Lanka just scamper a single.

That was not a particularly good over from Bess. It is early days.

  9. SL 23-1published at 7 overs

There's turn for Dom Bess, too, but Oshada Fernando is off the mark to a slightly too full delivery, moments after Lahiru Thirimanne crashes a short ball away for a single.

That was Leach's 300th first-class wicket. He has a very good record in second innings in Tests.

England knew Perera would come hard at Leach. He has bowled it so if you miss the sweep shot you are out. If it was over the wicket Perera would have got outside the line. Bowling round the wicket the risk increases.

It was a good tactic from England.

  12. SL 19-1published at 6 overs

    Lead by 56

Sharp turn for Jack Leach as Oshada Fernando shuffles deep into his crease, and the ball rips past the outside edge.

Leach ends a very good over with a similar delivery that just slides pas the bat as Fernando presses forward in defence.

Oshada Fernando, who made a duck in the first innings, has arrived at the crease.

In club cricket every umpire would give that out. They would give it out for the shot.

    K Perera lbw Leach 14 (SL 19-1)

Umpire's call on clipping the stumps! Kusal Perera goes!

Well, that wasn't as clear cut as I thought, but Perera has to go. He'd gone to sweep, missed, and ball tracking reckons that would have just skimmed the top of middle. That's the first wicket for an England spinner in the match.

England are desperate for this to go for them.

  17. Postpublished at 05:13 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2021

Now then. Is this a bit higher than it first look?

It's hit Perera in the midriff as he gets down to sweep, but he's not got down as low as I thought...

    Jack Leach strikes!

He traps Kusal Perera lbw and, after a while, it's given. Perera reviews.
