I was disappointed not to be there at the end, it would have been nice to see us home but we've just got to keep looking to improve and getting better. It's about trying to kick on now and not being happy with what we've achieved - both the team and for me.

"Our recent away form is testament to the guys. Both in South Africa and here we've started to implement the game plan that we've been trying to do and we're starting to see that progression and it working time and time again. We've spoke previously about us not playing well away from home and not taking 20 wickets and making big first-innings runs so hopefully long may this continue and there's some more runs to come this summer."

Sri Lanka lost their way a bit - the fields to Dom Sibley were strange. Their mind seemed scrambled with the bat and ball.

More from Joe Root on TMS: "Nothing will give Dom Sibley more confidence than scoring runs and winning the game and that's the sort of thing you strive for as a batsman. That will give him a lot of confidence. He has extremely hard on his game in the last couple of weeks, there has been a lot of talk about him, but to be in that position today and deal with all of that is testament to his character.

"I thought the game would be decided on who handled the pressure best and thankfully I think we did. There were times when you walk out and you've got a deficit like that and it would have been very easy to go into your shell and not look to win the game. But the way we did it by squeezing them and we knew that restricting boundaries would allow us to create chances and indecision and that's ultimately what changed the game for us. I'm really pleased with how we went about it - that's what we're asking of them."

We'll find out soon enough - England head to India some time this week, with the first Test starting on 5 February in Chennai.

England captain Joe Root on Test Match Special: "From that first reverse sweep of Jimmy's it has been a pretty good day. The guys were brilliant in the field. I felt we created a lot of pressure and soaked things up, squeezed the game, and we caused a bit of chaos and mayhem and thankfully we restricted them to a total we were very comfortable with.

"The most pleasing thing for me was that the spinners took the responsibility and ownership to get us into that position but I thought the way we handled the chase with such calmness and poise was really outstanding. To deal with that kind of pressure, on a surface like that, shows we've come a long way. In the past we'd have made that look a lot more difficult."

They should hang this in the Lord's long room.

England captain Joe Root: "It was a fine performance in this game. To come out on top having lost the toss, on a wicket where we had the worst of it, it is testament to the character of the boys. We were outstanding with the ball in the first innings, and that last innings was about showing maturity and calmness and a lot of boys did that.

"We knew we wanted to try and get as close to them as a group but ultimately when we bowled we wanted to create chaos and make it difficult for them to score boundaries. We knew if we could create pressure we'd create opportunities on that surface.

"There were difficult balls to face and I'm really proud of how calm the group were. Credit to our bowlers too, they put Sri Lanka under a huge amount of pressure in areas."

Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal: "We were outplayed today. We have done all the hard work in the last three days but as a batting unit we made the same mistakes of the first Test. There are no excuses for the batsmen and we've got to learn how to bat like Joe Root. He was outstanding. We've got to be patient when it comes to batting. Credit goes to England they have done tremendously well.

"I played a rash shot and I have to take that responsibility. Nobody in our batting line-up took responsibility. If we got 250-plus that would have been a good score. The batting unit have to step up and we have to learn how to bat with patience.

"Embuldeniya was outstanding throughout the series. He is doing all the hard work in practice and he always comes and asks how to improve - both with the bat and ball. That was a good area for us and I'm sure he will be a good asset going forward."

This isn't a great Sri Lankan team, and neither was the one they beat last time, but to win five Tests in a row in these conditions is a great effort. It is an amazing achievement if you think of the heat and lack of preparation.

More from Dom Sibley on Sky Sports: "I've never really faced the spinner with the new ball, so it was about trying to work it out, getting a little bit of luck and go from there.

"Jos and I spoke about going down in 10s and working at it from there. He plays at a higher tempo but took the pressure off me a bit and allowed me to just say 'I need to be here at the end'.

"I was in a very dark place the other night so it's nice to end the series on the high."

This is England's sixth successive win in Sri Lanka. There has only been one other occasion when England have won six in a row against a specific opposition away from home - it was the first eight Tests they played against South Africa in the 19th century.

I was so excited to get out here and before Christmas I felt really well prepared and I didn't think I'd left any stone unturned with regards playing spin but then you go back to your room in the evening and think 'maybe I'm not up to this' and have those doubts but it is about accepting those and just believing.

"It just feels like pure relief at the moment, Jos came in and played unbelievable. I feel like I earnt the luck with the reviews.

"I will just enjoy the win. There are people coming back into the team for India so I'll just keep working hard and there are no guarantees I'll be in the team and I haven't had a great series so I'm not taking any chances. I'll keep working hard and hopefully get an opportunity and score some runs."

Lasith Embuldeniya has taken 15 wickets at just under 27 in the series. The rest of Sri Lanka's bowlers have taken nine wickets at more than 60.

It is even more extreme against England's genuine batsman - against the top six he has taken 12 wickets and averaged 23, the others between them have taken two wickets for 410 runs.

England opener Dom Sibley on Sky Sports: "I was relieved to be honest - I'd had a stinker. I'd worked hard on playing spin over the winter but I started to doubt myself. I had some luck today but it was nice to spend some time at the crease and get us over the line.

"I felt stuck at the crease at times in the summer, so I've worked on playing spin and when it wasn't going so well it was about believing still and not doubting myself even though the same bowler got me three times. It was about spending 20-30 balls in and getting in.

"Watching Joe Root makes you feel inadequate, to be honest! The way he's played has been incredible. I've had tough net sessions, to doubt the work I'd done beforehand takes courage and it paid off a little bit today."
