It is a bit like Sri Lanka looked at their performance on the opening day of this series, thought 'can we be a bit more ridiculous?' and then batted like that.

Still. England do have to bat again, but I think this is a gettable target...

  3. 'Sri Lanka have panicked'published at 06:34 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2021

I am not ruling out seven wickets in the afternoon session. Whatever England have to chase I will be interested to see how they play.

Will they take this risky approach?

Bess and Leach have bowled nicely but Sri Lanka have gifted England this opportunity. When you are not too confident you do tend to panic. That is what they have done this morning.

Seven wickets for 72 runs in that session.

    You know. Normal.

What an absolutely ridiculous two hours of cricket.

  6. dropped catch

Perera dropped on 0published at 21 overs

    That is a drop!

A sharp chance, outside edge flying to Joe Root at slip, and he gets one hand to it but can't cling on.

  7. SL 66-6published at 20.4 overs

This is a batting performance as bad as Sri Lanka put on in the first innings of the first Test.

  8. Postpublished at 06:29 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2021

Sri Lanka are 103 runs in front with four wickets in hand.

I know I am a bit old but when has it changed that you just see your team into lunch? Dickwella has played enough cricket to know that.

At least make Bess bowl his best ball. Shocking batting.

That is not a great shot from Dickwella.

    My WORD.

That is, in a word, nonsense from Niroshan Dickwella. Horrible, horrible, horrible. It's an average delivery from Dom Bess and Dickwella, for reasons best known to himself, slaps it straight - and I mean straight - to Dan Lawrence at extra cover. There's two minutes to go until lunch!!

  12. Postpublished at 06:26 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2021

Sri Lanka's lead has just stretched beyond 100.

That is a good chance. Thirmanne gobbled them up at slip. That was a relatively straight-forward one for Root.

That seemed to take Root by surprise.

  15. dropped catch

    Close!published at 20 overs

Almost a fourth for Jack Leach!

Ramesh Mendis presses forward and this delivery turns sharply, so sharply that it takes the outside edge, and the ball surprises Joe Root at slip. Root throws both his hands down but the ball bursts through and, to add insult to injury, goes for four.

Abdullah Haider: England need to win this Test to stay in the race for the Test Championship final heading to India. Then a 2-1 series win in India will be enough to qualify for the final if Australia don't win 2 of their 3 Tests in South Africa. So much at stake here. Context.

Mendis has a first-class triple century at a strike-rate of more than 100. This could be interesting.

Four more to Niroshan Dickwella as he reverse sweeps - a little aerially, it has to be said, but it's through backward point and it beats a diving Dom Sibley on the boundary.

A wild, loose sweep from Niroshan Dickwella and he misses the ball by a yard, which spins quickly over the top of the stumps and runs away for a couple of byes.
