More good running earns Rory Burns a couple and takes the partnership above fifty. The England dressing room clap in appreciation.

Virat Kohli pulls Ravi Ashwin for a chat mid over, and he's very animated, waving his arms everywhere. He's starting to tick.

  4. Eng 49-0published at 19 oers

First real sign of spin for India as Shahbaz Nadeem gets a little bit of grip, but it was far too wide to challenge Dom Sibley at all.

Sibley is reading the length of the spinners much better today. He's playing with soft hands too, and looks much more comfortable.

The Supreme Meme: *whispers* This has been a very positive start from England.

Moff: Say it quietly but Sibley looks like he fancies a long, long bat.

Rory Burns picks up three more with a chop through backward point, as Ravi Ashwin drops a little bit too short again.

Ashwin is having a conflab with Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane when the over is done. India need something here.

Double spin for India now as Virat Kohli turns to Shahbaz Nadeem. The left-armer has only played one Test before - recording match figures of 4-40 against South Africa in 2019.

Rory Burns clubs a sweep away for three, before Nadeem drops short and wide and Dom Sibley cuts away for four more.

Sibley struggled against the left-arm spin of Lasith Embuldeniya in Sri Lanka so this will be another test for the opener.

England's running has been excellent so far as Rory Burns steals another single to mid-on.

We haven't seen Joe Root on the coverage yet but I imagine he's delighted with this start.

As promised, the answer to Adam Mountford's latest quiz question from 04:48 GMT is Karun Nair.

He made 303 not out after being dropped by Alastair Cook in the 30s.

Cook, who is part of the Channel 4 TV coverage, said it is the second most expensive drop in Test history.

  13. Eng 37-0published at 15 overs

    Burns 15, Sibley 20

Good from Jasprit Bumrah as he attempts a yorker to Rory Burns, but the left-hander does well to jab his bat down and keep it out. It was a no-ball, though.

The extra delivery sees Bumrah sneak one past Dom Sibley's outside edge. That didn't carry to Rishabh Pant behind the stumps.

Sadly, the Test Match Special team can’t be in Chennai for this tour, but here are some pictures from England’s last Test in the city back in 2016.

Henry Blofeld was with us for one of his last TMS tours before retirement and you’ll spot the current England national selector Ed Smith who was part of our team for that series.

    Burns 13, Sibley 19

Good from Dom Sibley again. He plants his front foot forward and flicks Ravi Ashwin through square for another boundary. It's pretty sloppy from Rohit Sharma though, as he misses the ball with his attempted flick back.

Sibley has read the length of Ashwin a lot better than he did the spinners in Sri Lanka so far.

    Burns 13, Sibley 15

I'll be honest I haven't been that impressed with India's fielding so far. There was that missed run out a couple of overs ago, and there's been quite a few fumbles.

Having said that, they are a lot more energetic and enthusiastic than some of the Indian teams I've seen in my lifetime.

I'm expecting Virat Kohli to start getting pretty frustrated shortly. He's already reduced his catchers to a third slip and a gully.

Based on the fact we've only got through 12 overs in the first hour I think it's safe to say we'll be playing till 11:30 GMT today, light and weather permitting.
