This pitch will turn - not yet but it will. England will be hoping it starts when they've got 450 on the board, not 250.

You can already see the redness of the Chennai dirt appearing in the foot holes. Ashwin is tossing the ball up in search of turn. He hasn't found any serious spin... yet.

We know how steadfast Joe Root is about batting at four, so what else could England do other than to put Dan Lawrence at three?

He did look really assured in his first Test. He's got the character and we'll see whether he's got the game to step up. Batting at three, against India, when they've just taken a wicket, is tough. It's the hardest place to bat. You are sitting there, not knowing for how long, and you are on tenterhooks all the time.

  4. Eng 68-2published at 28 overs

    Sibley 26, Root 5

Root steals a single from the final ball of Bumrah's over.

The line and length was immaculate from India's superstar fast bowler. He's getting this ball to move a little too.

Ashwin will continue from the other end.

  5. 'India will swarm over England given the chance'published at 06:47 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2021

The worry for England, well there's two things. If India won the toss I suspect they wouldn't bat like that. They would bat and bat and bat.

The worry for me in this series is that if England lose the first Test it is going to very difficult for them to come back. The Tests do come in a rush and India will swarm all over England if they get the chance.

  6. Eng 67-2published at 27.4 overs

The India fielders have been buoyed by their lunch and the two quick wickets before the break.

There's plenty of chatter as Root faces up to Bumrah.

Since Alastair Cook led England to victory in India in 2012, India have played 34 Tests and lost only one, and won 28. It is one of the toughest assignments in the history of cricket.

It bears comparisons with visiting the West Indies in the 1980s, in terms of the likelihood of winning.

  8. Eng 67-2published at 27 overs

    Sibley 26, Root 4

Virat is out in the middle, waving his arms and directing his men.

Jasprit Bumrah has the ball in hand. The England skipper is on strike.

It wasn't an exciting start from England but it was an attritional, hard-fought, sort of shadow boxing.

I expect no-one would be more disappointed by that dismissal than Rory Burns himself.

The afternoon session will get under way any minute now. England need to bat, bat and bat some more on a very good batting pitch.

England were looking well set after winning an important toss.

When people get out to the reverse sweep everyone in the world is going to criticise you but I think it is one of Rory Burns' go to shots. I've seen him play that all the time. It wasn't the right moment to play that shot because another 30-40 runs would have put India under great pressure.

  13. 'Ghastly shot'published at 06:36 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2021

Utter aberration. Burns might play the reverse sweep but why he played it then I am not sure.

It was a ghastly shot. It was one you cannot begin to explain.

On the flattest pitch he is likely to have seen, when all the talk is about batting a long time, why play a shot like that?

Just waking up in the UK?

Things were going really well for England in the morning session but a frantic 15 minutes before lunch left India on top.

Dom Sibley and Rory Burns batted really well to reach 63-0 but Burns played a bizarre reverse sweep to Ravichandran Ashwin and gloved a catch to the keeper for 33.

    It was a gift.

That brought Dan Lawrence to the crease and he was trapped lbw for a five-ball duck by Jasprit Bumrah.

England are 67-2 at lunch. It could have been even worse with skipper Joe Root almost run out in the final over before the break.

And in Chittagong, Bangladesh are chipping away against West Indies.

West Indies began the day 75-2 in response to their hosts 430 and are now 191-5.

20-year-old spinner Nayeem Hasan grabbed the big wicket of stand-in Kraigg Brathwaite for 76.

India v England isn't the only Test going on this morning.

Over in Karachi, South Africa have had a decent morning against Pakistan.

The hosts resumed on 145-3 but both Babar Azam and Fawad Alam, the two batsmen not out overnight, are out. Anrich Nortje removed skipper Babar for 77 and Fawad was brilliant run out by Temba Bavuma for 45.

Pakistan are now 177-5 with Mohammad Rizwan and Faheem Ashraf at the crease.

It was all going too well, wasn't it? That's definitely India's session in the end for me.
