  1. Eng 92-2published at 42 overs

    Sibley 35, Root 18

Dom Sibley is playing the left-arm spinner better than he did in Sri Lanka. He got out to Lasith Embuldeniya three times in four innings but here has played Nadeem well.

One run comes from the first over after drinks.

It is fascinating cricket, it really is.

England have to be happy with that hour since lunch. They may have only added 25 runs but they have not lost a wicket.

They had to recover after that crazy spell before lunch when England lost two wickets in 15 minutes before the break, having earlier looked comfortable.

  4. 'Bumrah is a wizard'published at 07:43 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2021

India are such a better team than Sri Lanka - their bowling has been so much more disciplined.

Jasprit Bumrah is a wizard. I love the way he tip toes in and then whish it's down the other end at 85-86mph with a little bit of reverse swing.

Dave (hamstring), Steve (thigh), Dean (tuna) are all out. Excellent stuff although painful, I'm sure.

Dean Cornish: I genuinely got injured (was out for 2 months) after treading on a serrated tuna can whilst preparing teas for a game. It needed 7 stitches!

  7. drinks break

    Drinks - Eng 91-2published at 41 overs

Root greets off-spinner Washington Sundar by playing the shot of the day so far. He finds a gap at extra cover perfectly.

The England skipper then gets down to sweep, I think for the first time today. We saw that so much in Sri Lanka.

Five from the over and that's drinks.

  8. 'A nice start but India won't feel threatened'published at 07:38 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2021

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on the Cricket Social

Recent history of India in pink ball cricket, they were bowled out for 36 at the Adelaide Oval, so I do look at this tour and think that could be England's real opportunity.

Batting first here is an opportunity but they are going to have to bat really well. The game is on a knife edge at the moment because England haven't really gone anywhere. It's a nice start, it's ok, but I don't think India will feel too threatened because the scoring rate isn't moving.

It's a double change from Virat. Washington Sundar replaces his fellow spinner Ashwin.

This may be a little chance for England to get going after a spell of intense pressure from India. They won't want to throw their wickets away to the back-up bowlers, mind.

  10. Eng 86-2published at 40 overs

Nadeem was a little wayward in his five-over spell earlier. He's better here although Root gets back to chop a single.

  11. 'Batting three too big a step for Lawrence'published at 07:35 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2021

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on the Cricket Social

There was lots of debate around the team - Ben Foakes could have played, Dan Lawrence got moved to three rather than Ollie Pope because Pope is just back into the team.

If you look at Lawrence he played nicely in his first Test, struggled more in the second, and now all of a sudden he's batting at three against the likes of Jasprit Bumrah. I think it was too big a step at this stage.

Ishant's impressive spell is over. It's spin from both ends with left-armer Nadeem Shahbaz back in the attack.

  14. Eng 85-2published at 39 overs

    Sibley 35, Root 11

It's not cricket but didn't Rio Ferdinand injure his knee watching TV? Impressive stuff.

Sibley gets a much-needed boundary to release some pressure. He gets forward and clips Ashwin through mid-wicket.

Ashwin gives Rohit a glare for not getting down to prevent the runs.

We want to hear about your favourite freak cricket injuries - or even better ones experienced in your side.

But I'm going to nominate my favourite ever when Quinton de Kock was walking his dog, the night before the Test, he tripped over his dog and injured himself. He twisted his ankle and was out of the Test. It's even more unfortunate when you don't alert the rest of the camp what has happened so the very next morning and they turn round and go 'where's Quinton' and they have to fly someone up from Port Elizabeth.

Rohit has now put a helmet on and moved even closer at slip. It'll take a good catch to hold onto the ball there.

Ishant is running in hard, sweat making a mess of his floppy fringe.

Root is tentative but still grins at the end of the over when Cheteshwar Pujara misses with a throw at the stumps.

  17. Eng 81-2published at 37.2 overs

Edged by Root! Short of Rohit Sharma under a floppy hat at slip.

India are right on it here.

  18. Eng 81-2published at 37 overs

    Sibley 31, Root 11

The pressure is building on Sibley. I can sense it. Three times in Ashwin's latest over he picks out a well-placed fielder at mid-wicket.

The Indians are getting more and more animated around the bat.

Conner Hoye: Sibley needs to start rotating the strike at the very least otherwise he's going to get bogged down and get out to a false shot - Root doesn't need the pressure either.

  20. Eng 81-2published at 36 overs

Kohli looked like he wanted to review there, knowing it was the big wicket of Root, but ultimately decided against it.

    A good delivery.
